CANYON, Tex. - Facing a West Texas A&M team that was an NCAA Division II Elite Eight team in 2009 and carrying a preseason ranking of 6th in the nation, CSU-Pueblo played a very evenly matched game, getting numerous offensive changes and showing encouraging progress in a 2-1 loss Saturday.

The game was destined to a be tie, which would be a great moal victory for the Pack, but a late penalty shot goal by West Texas A&M accounted for the eventual winning margin.

Based on raw numbers in every category except goals, CSU-Pueblo actually outplayed the Buffs.  The Pack out-shot West Texas A&M 19-17 and won more balls than their opponent.

"I think we possessed the ball about 60 percent of their time to their 40 percent," Pack coach Janet Cassidy said.  "I'm very pleased with their efforts and competitiveness against such a highly-touted team."

The Pack's lone goal was netted by Melissa Christensen (Jr, Kenosha, Wisc.) in the game's 53rd minute, which tied the game at one.  The Buffaloes' game-winning penalty kick goal was scored in the 63rd minute.

CSU-Pueblo will hit the field right away when they meet Eastern New Mexico for its final exhibition in Santa Fe, N.M. Sunday.  The Pack opens up its 2010 regular season Sept. 4 at home against Abilene Christian.
