PUEBLO, Colo. - The ThunderWolves continued their
outstanding start to the 2010 season Sunday, sweeping Colorado
Mines with a pair of shutouts Sunday, posting 5-0 and 4-0 wins over
the Orediggers.
The Pack's shutouts are already their fifth of the season
through ten games, an impressive number when you consider that the
ThunderWolves posted just three shutouts all of last season.
Additionally, the Pack's five shutouts through ten games in 2010
already marks the sixth-most shutouts put up in a single season in
program history.
The Pack's day of pitching mastery began behind Justine
Bosio (So., Santa Barbara, Calif.), who threw her third
shutout of the season in just five appearances. Bosio allowed
six Oredigger hits over seven innings while not walking any
batters.
After starting her season giving up five runs in a win over
Regis, Bosio, now 5-0 on the season, has been virtually
unhittable, allowing just one earned run over her past 28 innings,
striking out 18 and not giving up a single walk. Bosio hasn't
allowed a base on balls in the past 28-2/3 innings.
Bosio also helped herself out with her bat in the first game,
drilling a two-run shot to left-centerfield in the sixth inning,
breaking open a game that was 1-0 at that point and paving the way
for a four-run sixth for the ThunderWolves.
Bosio was shown up in the second game, though, by circle-mate
Kyla Nelson (So., Lakewood, Colo.), who flirted
with a no-hitter until the fifth inning, eventually hurling a
two-hit gem in the Pack's 4-0 win in the nightcap. Nelson
fanned four batters in her outing, with one of the two hits coming
by way of infield single and the other a one-base dink into shallow
rightfield.
Nelson's win was solidified by a pair of home runs a three-run
third inning, the first by the 98-pound shortstop Samantha
Rios (Fr., Fullerton, Calif.), who packed a lot of muscle
in driving a ball over the rightfield fence to open the
inning.
Three batters later, the Pack's top power-hitter in Bo
Nuanez (Sr., Lafayette, Colo.) crushed the
ball over the scoreboard in leftfield, her two-run jack giving
CSU-Pueblo the 4-0 lead, which it would hold on to for the
remainder of the game.
CSU-Pueblo, now 7-3 and 3-1 in RMAC play, will continue its
12-game home stand next weekend when Regis comes to town Friday and
Saturday.
