Pack splits doubleheader

CSU-Pueblo 3, Nebraska-Kearney 0
Chadron State 6, CSU-Pueblo 5

The CSU-Pueblo Softball team closed out the weekend pod-style series with Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, defeating the Lopers 3-0 in game one, before a heartbreaking loss against Chadron State 6-5.

Justine Bosio (So., Santa Barbara, Calif.) was given the starting nod from head coach Shane Showalter to start her second game on the young season and Bosio took on the challenge to face a pesky Loper squad of Nebraska-Kearney, allowing five hits along with striking out four.

Two runs in the first two-innings was all that was needed for the Pack to get their third straight shutout victory, a feat that has not been accomplised since the 2001 searon.  A run late in the game also was collected by the T-Wolves.

Game two against Chadron State began in somewhat of a pitcher's dual as Kyla Nelson (So., Lakewood, Colo.) faced an Eagles team who had earlier in the day lost to Nebraska-Kearney 9-8 in 9 innings.

The first score of the game came in the 4th inning when the Eagles capitalized on a T-Wolves error, allowing the inning to continue for another run to take the lead 2-0, a lead that was  matched in the home half of the inning when leadoff Kelly Purcell (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) walked, one batter later Bo Nuanez (Sr., Lafayette, Colo.) doubled to right-center, her third of the season and 5th RBI of the season.

Another run in the top half of the next inning for the Eagles was matched once again as the Pack went on to score 3 run in the bottom half to give them the lead 5-3 heading to the 5th inning.

Leading 6-4 going to the top of the 7th inning, Nelson allowed a one-out walk then getting a quick second out with a line drive back at the mound.  Next batter up for the Eagles was their biggest offensive batter Stephanie Hillman, who earlier in the day belted two big home runs in the opening game of the day, singled in what turned out to be the game winner with the Pack falling 6-5.

CSU-Pueblo (4-2) will look to build on their success next weekend when they play host to Colorado Mines in a weekend series doubleheader with Saturday scheduled first pitch at 12 pm at Rawlings Softball Complex.
