Game 1: CSU-Pueblo 8, Western
New Mexico 4
Game 2: Western New Mexico 2,
CSU-Pueblo 1
Needing to sweep in order to claim its first ever RMAC West
Division title, CSU-Pueblo fell short Sunday, winning 8-4 in the
opener before falling 2-1 in the late game vs. Western New Mexico.
The split moves the Pack to 28-16 overall and 22-12 in RMAC
play, just percentage points behind Adams State in the West
Division standings. Adams State split its doubleheader Sunday
with Mesa State, leaving the Grizzlies at 22-15 overall and 21-11
in RMAC play, .009 percentage points ahead of the ThunderWolves.
Despite this, the day wasn't without its highlights.
On senior day for the ThunderWolves, shortstop Janine Tyler (Sr.,
Pueblo, Colo.) etched her name into the CSU-Pueblo record
books, swiping a total of five bases during the doubleheader and
taking over the top spot on the career stolen base charts.
Tyler now has 67 stolen bases in her career, now two better than
previous all-time leader, Amber Aragon (2001-04). At the
plate, Tyler went 2-for-5 on the day, smashing a homer in game
one. Tyler, who is also the career-leader in batting average
in ThunderWolf history, raised her 2009 average to a robust .511,
which will keep her in the top five nationally.
The ThunderWolves, however, will receive the RMAC's fourth seed
in the eight-team RMAC tournament, which will kick off April 30 at
Metro State College in Denver. CSU-Pueblo's first opponent in
the double-elimination tourney will be Regis.
