PUEBLO, Colo. - The ThunderWolves kept rolling Sunday, opening a
four-game set with Mesa State by posting a dominant sweep of
Mavericks, tying a school record with its 11th straight win.
The Pack posted wins of 5-2 and 4-0 over the Mavericks, running
their 2009 record to 20-10 and 14-6 in RMAC play.
CSU-Pueblo's Sunday sweep marks the earliest the ThunderWolves had
reached the 20-win mark since their 50-win season in 2001.
The ThunderWolves' wins were delivered in classic fashion -
behind quality pitching and timely hitting.
In game one, the ThunderWolves trailed 2-0 through
three-and-a-half innings before taking advantage of Mesa State
errors to claw for the lead. The first blow came in the
fourth inning, when a throwing error by Mesa State third baseman
Stacy Ball helped to extend an inning in which the Pack sent across
two unearned runs to tie the score.
In the sixth inning, the Pack shattered the glass ceiling to
send across three runs, started by a leadoff double by Janine Tyler
(Sr., Pueblo, Colo.), who later stole home on a failed
strikeout-throw-out double play attempt by the Mavericks, and ended
by a pair of RBI singles by Bo Nuanez (Jr.,
Lafayette, Colo.) and Lindsey
Marmolejo (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.).
Starting pitcher Amber Higby (Sr.,
Pueblo, Colo.) earned her ninth win of the season with a
stellar effort in a complete-game five-hitter, only allowing one
earned run.
In game two, a lights out effort by Kelsey Swanberg
(Sr., Arvada, Colo.), who turned in the Pack's second
shutout of the season, combined with a pair of Pack homers was all
that was needed to secure the sweep.
A first-inning bomb by Kayla Dionese (Fr.,
Pueblo, Colo.) put the Pack up 2-0, and a two-run shot by
Kelly
Purcell (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) gave the Pack a 4-0
cushion that they never relinquished.
The ThunderWolves will look to bust the school win streak record
Monday when it hosts Mesa State for the final two games of its
series, starting at 11 a.m. at the Rawlings Sports Complex.
