Game 1: CSU-Pueblo 11, Augustana
3
Game 2: CSU-Pueblo 3, University
of Mary 1
The ThunderWolves opened up Friday's Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference/Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Crossover with a
bang, taking it to Augustana (S.D.) with an 11-2 win, and following
it up with an impressive win a pitcher's dual vs. the University of
Mary, coming through with a 3-1 win.
The ThunderWolves were churning in all facets of the game
Friday, getting timely hits, strong pitching, and key plays in the
field.
The key for the Pack - two-out hits.
CSU-Pueblo came through with seven runs on eight hits in two-out
situations vs. Augustana, and scored one run on three hits after
two outs vs. Mary. The two-out run vs. Mary, coming on an RBI
single by Kelly Purcell (Jr.,
Las Vegas, Nev.) in the third inning, was a huge insurance
run, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead against a tough and intimidating
pitcher in Mary hurler Brenda Langston.
Pitching delivered strong performances in both games, as
Justine
Bosio (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) threw six strong
innings for the Pack against Augustana, giving up three earned
runs, while game two starter, Amber Higby (Sr.,
Pueblo, Colo.) was even more impressive, perplexing Mary
for a complete-game five-hitter, only allowing one earned
run.
The cherry on the sundae for the ThunderWolves was the powerful
return to the lineup of Janine Tyler (Sr.,
Pueblo, Colo.). The Pack's starting shortstop saw
her first action of the season after missing the first four games
of 2009 with an illness, and was absolutely unstoppable.
Tyler went 5-for-9 over the two games, finishing a double away
from the cycle against Augustana, going 3-for-5, and going 2-for-4
vs. Mary. On the day, Tyler, CSU-Pueblo's all-time triples
leader, finished with two triples, as well as a home run.
The ThunderWolves' will look to carry momentum into the second
day of Regional Crossover when it takes on Minnesota-Duluth and
Southwest Minnesota State.
