CSU-Pueblo 35, New Mexico Highlands 7
LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Behind big games by tailback Jamaal Johnson
(So., Fountain, Colo.) and receiver Augustine Agyei
(Sr., Aurora, Colo.), CSU-Pueblo ended a three-game skid
by cruising to a 35-7 win over New Mexhico Highlands Saturday.
The game started off with a bang as Agyei returned a kickoff 96
yards to the house, converting the first kickoff return for a
touchdown for the first time since 1984, giving CSU-Pueblo a 7-0
lead. Agyei accumulated 136 kickoff return yards, putting his
2009 total to 653 kickoff return yards and setting a CSU-Pueblo
school record. In addition to his kick return touchdown,
Agyei also scored on a touchdown reception in the first quarter.
The ThunderWolves relied on a running game to establish tempo
and maintain control of the game. Johnson ran for 131 yards
and two touchdowns as the ThunderWolves logged 269 yards on the
ground. Jesse Lewis (So.,
Loveland, Colo.) ran for 102 yards, his second
straight 100-yard game.
Defensively, the Pack was absolutely dominant, allowing a grand
total of zero yards on the ground to the Cowboys and holding the
Highlands passing game to nine completions for 153 yards. The
Pack defense logged six sacks, led by Jerry McWilliams
(Sr., Fountain, Colo.), who had two sacks.
Quarterback Colin Clancy (Sr.,
Longmont, Colo.), who had struggled of late, enjoyed a
much-needed efficient game, completing 11 of 18 passes for 129
yards, two scores and no interceptions, relying largely on the
running attack to carry the game. On the season, Clancy
has completed 119 passes, which is a new CSU-Pueblo single season
record for pass completions. He has also passed for
1,386 yards, currently the fourth-highest single season passing
yardage total in CSU-Pueblo history.
The Pack will look to mount a winning streak next Saturday when
it hosts Western State at CSU-Pueblo's Homecoming. Kickoff is
scheduled for 2 p.m.
