Mesa State 21, CSU-Pueblo 13
The Pack was within shooting distance in the 4th quarter vs.
Mesa State, but couldn't convert a game-tying drive late in the
game, falling to the Mavericks 21-13.
A would-be game-tying touchdown came with 2:50 remaining in
the fourth quarter when Colin Clancy (Sr.,
Longmont, Colo.) fired a strike to Demetrius
Gilmore (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) on fourth down,
only to have the play nullified due to Clancy being beyond the line
of scrimmage. The result was a turnover on downs.
The Pack got another opportunity after they regained possession
with 2:05 remaining, but Clancy threw an interception to Adam
Silverthorn, ending the Pack's dreams of a rally.
The game was defined by Mesa State's control of the line of
scrimmage. The Mavericks accumulated 196 rushing yards, 138
coming from tailback Will Halboth, while protecting quarterback
Michael Mankoff well, not allowing a single sack to the
ThunderWolves.
The Pack was no slouch in the running game, either, rumbling for
155 rushing yards as both Jesse Lewis (So.,
Loveland, Colo.) and Johnny Wood (So.,
Canon City, Colo.) each turned in career highs in rushing
yardage. Lewis had his first 100-yard game, gaining 106 yards
on 14 carries, while Wood ran the ball nine times for 42 yards.
The ThunderWolves' loss marks their third in as many games, and
dips their record to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in RMAC play.
CSU-Pueblo will travel to winless New Mexico Highlands next weekend
to take on the Cowboys.
