  • Title
    Assistant Baseball Coach

Mike Sanchez rejoined the CSU Pueblo coaching staff in August 2021 as an assistant coach.

This is Sanchez’s second stint on the ThunderWolves coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach from 2012-20, which came on the heels of a four-year playing career at CSU Pueblo.

During his first stint at his alma mater, Sanchez – who will primarily work with the infielders – served as the first base coach, while also coaching infielders and hitting. He helped the ThunderWolves to an overall record of 208-161 during his first eight years on staff while the program went 153-100 in RMAC action.

Sanchez also helped CSU Pueblo the RMAC tournament in each of the seven seasons the tournament was held while on staff including appearances in the 2013 and 2015 NCAA Tournament. During the 2015 season, he helped the ThunderWolves to No. 8 spot in the national rankings. Over the seven seasons where conference awards were handed out, he helped coach 19 All-League infielders and five All-RMAC Gold Glovers.

Prior to his return to CSU Pueblo, Sanchez was the field director and head coach of the Azteca Baseball Club from 2019-21. He is also a volunteer basketball coach at Pueblo East High School.

As a player with the ThunderWolves, Sanchez was a four-year starter from 2007-10. He set the program record for highest career and single-season fielding percentage for a second baseman. During his senior season, he earned the distinction of being the hardest player to strikeout in the nation after striking out just four times in 144 at-bats. Sanchez was an All-RMAC Honorable Mention in 2008 and a second-team honoree in 2010.

Sanchez helped CSU Pueblo reach the RMAC Tournament in three of his four seasons, which included winning the tournament title in 2009 to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Sanchez graduated from CSU Pueblo with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and health promotion, education in 2010, and a master’s of education in 2012.

He currently resides in Pueblo.
