Mac Alexander

Mac Alexander is entering his third season with the Pack in 2025 as the program’s Associate Head Coach, Defensive Backs Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, and Passing Game Coordinator.

Last season, Alexander coached eight All-RMAC defensive backs, ranked seventh in Division II in interceptions and helped Daniel Bone III become a three-time All-American. Meanwhile, on special teams, Alexander's unit led the RMAC and was fourth in Division II in punt return defense and led the RMAC in kickoff defense. In addition, the Pack blocked seven kicks, which is was second in the RMAC and eighth nationally in Division II, including blocking five punts, and Evan Lyons led Division II in touch backs with 63, which was fourth in all levels of college football.

In his first season with the Pack in 2023, Alexander’s kickoff return unit led NCAA Division II in kickoff return yardage as they averaged 29.95 yards per return and Moosah Alsaffar was named a First-Team All-RMAC selection. Additionally, he coached an All-American defensive back (Daniel Bone III), and five All-RMAC defensive backs. 

Coach Alexander FamilyAlexander, who was selected to the 2024 AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, came to the ThunderWolves after spending the 2022 season as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach on Vigil’s Western New Mexico coaching staff. In 2022, Western New Mexico won six games and posted its first winning season in Lone Star Conference play since 1993. In addition, Alexander helped Jack Rasmussen earn First-Team All-LSC honors as a punter, along with coaching two other All-LSC specialists and three All-LSC defensive backs last season with the Mustangs.

Prior to working with Vigil at Western New Mexico, Alexander spent two seasons (2020-21) as a graduate assistant at NCAA Division I Washington State University, where he worked with the Cougars’ special teams. He coached a First-Team All-Conference kicker in 2021 and an AP All-American Freshman punter in 2021. The Cougars were second in the country in punting average and first nationally in field goal percentage in 2020.

Before working at Washington State, Alexander spent the 2019 season as an assistant coach working with the safeties at Tarleton State University. In his one year at Tarleton State, the team went 11-1 and captured the LSC Championship, and were undefeated in the regular season and finished the season with a No. 4 national ranking. He coached three All-LSC and All-Region defensive backs, as well as the LSC Defensive Back of the Year.  

Alexander is no stranger to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, as he was both a student-athlete at Colorado Mesa and an assistant football coach at both Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis College.

During the 2018 season, Alexander served as the defensive coordinator at Fort Lewis College, along with working as the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator. He coached two All-RMAC defensive backs and an All-RMAC punter. Alexander’s defense was tied for eighth nationally in Division II in defensive touchdowns.

Before working at Fort Lewis, Alexander spent six seasons coaching at his alma mater, Colorado Mesa. He began at Mesa as a student assistant working with the defensive backs in 2011, before working as a graduate assistant from 2014-15. He spent the 2014 season as a graduate assistant working with the defensive line and linebackers, before serving as a graduate assistant with the defensive backs in 2015.

After two seasons as a graduate assistant, Alexander served as the defensive backs coach and co-special teams coordinator from 2016-17. Was a part of back-to-back nine-win seasons at Mesa and coached a First-Team All-American safety and kicker in 2016, and his 2017 special teams unit was fifth in the nation with eight blocked kicks, and he coached an All-American return specialist and the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year.

Alexander played defensive back for the Colorado Mesa football program from 2009-2011 and was also a member of the Mavericks’ basketball program from 2011-14, including serving as the team captain in 2014.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Exercise Science from Colorado Mesa in 2014 and received his master’s degree in Human Performance and Physical Education from Adams State in 2016.

Alexander and his wife, Chazlyn, were married in 2016, and the couple are the parents of a son, Brady (3) and a daughter, Haley, who was born June 13, 2025.
