PUEBLO, Colo. – The No. 21-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team remained perfect on the young season Thursday night as a pair of second-half goals from Nick Cenek lifted the ThunderWolves to a 2-0 nonconference victory over Colorado Christian at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
With the win, CSU Pueblo improved to 5-0 on the season, while Colorado Christian fell to 1-2-4. The Pack finished the night with a 9-5 advantage in shots and placed four attempts on goal, while limiting the Cougars to just two shots on frame.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the ThunderWolves turned up the pressure in the second half, recording seven of their nine shots after halftime.
Cenek broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez picked up the assist on the play as Cenek found the back of the net at the 63:07 mark to put the Pack ahead 1-0.
Just 2:39 later, Cenek struck again. Jose Peris Gimeno supplied the assist on the second tally as Cenek completed his brace at 65:46 and doubled CSU Pueblo's advantage to 2-0. Cenek finished the match with a team-high four shots, including two on goal, and accounted for both ThunderWolves goals.
The two-goal cushion was more than enough for the Pack defense. Gonzalez played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped both shots he faced to secure the clean sheet. He also contributed offensively with the assist on Cenek's game-winning goal.
CSU Pueblo's back line held Colorado Christian to five total shots and only two on goal. The Pack also earned a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, including four corners during the second half.
Cenek's two goals came during a dominant second half for the ThunderWolves, who outshot CCU 7-2 over the final 45 minutes after the Cougars held a narrow 3-2 edge in attempts during the opening half.
