This is the first of nine articles highlighting the CSU Pueblo Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2026 and today's initial article features the 2017-18 women's basketball team. 

As the Colorado State University Pueblo Athletics community gears up for its prestigious Hall of Fame induction, the spotlight shines brightly on the unforgettable 2017-2018 women's basketball team.

In a recent exclusive interview, sophomore soccer player and sports information assistant Kenna Snyder sat down with standout program alumna Katie Cunningham to look back at the championship legacy that earned them a permanent place in ThunderWolves history.

But first, the 17th annual Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet is one of three on-campus events held during CSU Pueblo's Homecoming weekend celebration set for October 16-17, 2026. Former student-athletes being inductees in the Class of 2026 are Lauren Fairchild (track & field, 2016-2021); Scott Gallas (football, 1976-1980); Mike Guenther (wrestling, 1983-1985); Oni Lattin (volleyball, 2014-2015); Brad Ranson (basketball, 1980-1983); and John Trahan (football, 1981-1984).

Donnell Leomiti, a defensive backfield coach on the ThunderWolves to the 2014 NCAA Division II football championship, will join six student-athletes at the induction ceremonies to be held during Homecoming Weekend at CSU Pueblo.

Tim Simmons, a 1969 Southern Colorado State College mass communications graduate, will also be inducted as a contributor. The son of 2008 CSU Pueblo Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Harry Simmons, the younger Simmons is currently the school's Athletics Historian and the producer of the weekly e-blast newsletter – THE HOWLER.  
 

A Culture Built on Defense, Depth, and Chemistry

During her stellar two-year career with the ThunderWolves after transferring from Iowa Western, Cunningham established herself as a defensive powerhouse, earning back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honors [01:35] alongside an RMAC Tournament MVP title [01:48].

Reflecting on the magical 2017-2018 run, Cunningham emphasized that the team's success stemmed from an immediate, organic connection among the core returning group and key newcomers. "We all became super close [03:52]… everyone knew their role on the team early on, which cut out a lot of issues," Cunningham shared [04:12].

This deep sense of trust extended across the roster, where every player embraced a specialized role to drive the team forward:

• Taylor Long: A perimeter threat who could knock down crucial three-pointers while applying relentless defensive pressure on opposing point guards [11:59].

• Lauren Heyn: The ultimate hustler, known for tenacious defense and diving after every loose ball [12:20].

• Molly Rohrer: A dominant paint presence providing elite shot-blocking and scoring [12:30].

• Tuileisu Anderson: A versatile dynamo capable of pushing the pace, running the floor, and getting a quick bucket [12:34].

• Katie Cunningham: The playmaker and glass-cleaner, focusing on distribution and rebounding [12:50].

Overcoming Adversity and Chasing Championships

Every championship journey faces hurdles, and for the Pack, navigating a mid-career coaching transition presented a unique mental challenge [14:22]. Cunningham noted that adjusting to a new system tested the group early on [14:29], but ultimately brought them closer together through resilience and commitment [15:17].

That resilience culminated in one of the program's most iconic moments: capturing the RMAC Championship [08:50]. After falling short the previous year, cutting down the nets together stands out as the ultimate highlight [09:08].

Beyond the X's and O's, Cunningham fondly recalled the simple rhythms of game days—starting with morning shoot-arounds, grabbing coffee with teammates, team lunches, and the mandatory pre-game nap before packing the gym [09:53]. Above all, she cherishes how the local community rallied behind women's basketball [02:55], noting the incredible energy of fans showing up in droves to support the squad [08:03].

A Lasting Legacy

Today, Cunningham resides in Southern California working as a professional hairdresser [01:03], but the lessons learned at CSU Pueblo continue to shape her daily life. As she prepares to return to campus for the Hall of Fame induction festivities, her message to current student-athletes is simple: Make the most of your time, because it goes by fast. [10:56]
