ThunderWolves Drop Pair on Opening day at CUI Kickoff Classic

IRVINE, Calif. (January 30, 2026) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball opened the 2026 season with a pair of losses on day one of the Concordia University Irvine Kickoff Classic, falling 9-1 in five innings to Cal State Dominguez Hills before dropping a 5-3 decision to Azusa Pacific on Friday at Great Park.

GAME ONE
The ThunderWolves were limited to one hit in the opener as Cal State Dominguez Hills capitalized on defensive miscues to pull away early. CSU Pueblo's lone run came in the third inning when Reese Reimler (Fr., Champlin, Minn.) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Darleen Falcon (Sr., Moreno Valley, Calif.), trimming the deficit to 2-1.

The Toros broke the game open with a six-run third inning, scoring five unearned runs, and added a solo home run in the fourth to invoke the run rule. Reimler accounted for CSU Pueblo's only hit in the contest, while the Pack drew two walks but struck out seven times at the plate.

In the circle, Kayli Cooper (Jr., North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada) and McKenna James (Sr., Windsor, Colo.) combined to pitch four innings, with the ThunderWolves committing five errors defensively in the season opener.

GAME TWO
CSU Pueblo bounced back with a more competitive effort in the nightcap but came up just short against Azusa Pacific. The ThunderWolves struck first in the bottom of the first inning as James tripled to right-center field to score Madelyn Huerta (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) for a 1-0 lead.

Azusa Pacific answered with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take control, but the Pack stayed within striking distance. Belah Hrouda (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.) doubled home a run in the fourth, and Reimler delivered an RBI single in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth, and CSU Pueblo was unable mount a late comeback despite collecting seven hits in the game. Caitlyn Cole (Sr., Merced, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Hrouda and Reimler each drove in a run for the ThunderWolves.

Eva Miller-Sanchez (Fr., Denver, Colo.) went 5.1 innings in the circle for CSU Pueblo, allowing five runs (three earned), while Jaylah Rivera (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.

CSU Pueblo continues play at the CUI Kickoff Classic on Saturday as the ThunderWolves will play Chico State at 2:30 p.m. (MT) and Biola at 7 p.m. (MT).
