PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team went toe-to-toe with No. 16 Adams State on Tuesday night but came up just short in a tightly contested 23–19 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) loss to the Grizzlies.
The ThunderWolves picked up victories in five bouts on the night, including two bonus-point wins, but Adams State capitalized on key falls to secure the four-point dual victory.
CSU Pueblo struck early at 133 pounds as No. 11 ranked Jacob Myers (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) earned a fall at the 3:37 mark to put the ThunderWolves on the board. Eddie Bowman (So., Trinidad, Colo.) ranked 11th in the latest NWCA rankings, followed with a strong performance at 141 pounds, grinding out a 7–4 decision over No. 20 Kieran Thompson to give CSU Pueblo momentum.
Kevin Boston (So., Omaha, Neb.) defeated No. 18 Angel Flores and continued the run at 149 pounds with a narrow 3–2 decision, while Donn Greer (Sr., Soledad, Calif.) delivered one of the night's standout performances at 184 pounds. Greer controlled the action throughout the bout and earned a 15–6 major decision over Sergio Zaragoza, adding four crucial team points.
Henry Sturn (Jr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also came through late for the ThunderWolves, picking up a 4–1 decision over Jaylen Ignacio at heavyweight to keep the dual within reach.
Adams State proved difficult to overcome, however, earning falls at 125 and 157 pounds with a pair of No. 3 ranked wrestlers and added bonus points wins at 165 and 197 pounds to swing the team score in their favor.
Despite the setback, CSU Pueblo showed depth and resilience against a nationally ranked opponent and will look to build on the strong individual performances when they return to action on Jan. 23 and take on Chadron State on the road.
