Women's Tennis Concludes Kansas Trip With Setback to McPherson College

McPHERSON, Kan. - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team concluded its three-game road trip to Kansas here Friday with a 7-0 loss to McPherson College at the Bulldog Tennis Center. 

With the loss, the ThunderWolves fall to 1-7 overall on season and were 1-2 on its road trip, while McPherson improves to 4-2 on the year. 

In doubles action, the Bulldogs won all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day, but the Pack was able to win seven games over the three matches. 

McPherson's first win in doubles came at the No. 2 spot as sophomore Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and junior Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) fell 6-0 to Laureen Van Drunen and Taimi Nashiku, before the No. 3 team of senior Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) and freshman MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) took three games at No. 3 doubles as they lost 6-3 and the Pack's No. 1 team of senior Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District of Columbia) and senior Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) won four games as they fell 6-4.

In singles play, the Pack won 31 games across the six matches, including Brienza playing a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot as she fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 to Vanessa Hofer. 

Garcia won five games at No. 2 singles as she fell to McPherson's Alexandria Garcia, 6-3, 6-2. 

Aebischer took six games at No. 3 singles as she fell 6-2, 6-4 to Nashiku. 

At No. 4 singles, Travica lost 6-1, 6-0 to Van Drunen, while at No. 5 singles, Pendon lost 6-3, 6-0 to Pia Hinricher and Martinez suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 6 singles to Ava Bolin.

The Pack will return to action on Friday, March 14 with a 4 p.m. MT game in Hays, Kan., against Fort Hays State. FHSU collected a 4-3 win over the Pack during the fall season in Pueblo.
