Women's Tennis Opens Kansas Trip With 5-2 Setback to Bethel College

Brienza, Garcia Picked Up Wins at No. 2 and No. 3 Singles for Pack

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team continued its 2025 spring schedule here Wednesday afternoon with a 5-2 setback to Bethel College at the Ward Tennis Center.
 
Wednesday's match was the first of three matches on its road trip to Kansas as they will play a 2 p.m. MT match on Thursday at Sterling College and will conclude the road trip with a 9 a.m. MT match on Friday at McPherson College.
 
With the setback, the Pack falls to 0-6 on the season, including 0-3 in the spring season.
 
In Wednesday's match, Bethel earned the doubles point as they picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but the Pack prevented a sweep by the Threshers in doubles as the Pack's No. 2 team of junior Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) and sophomore Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) picked up a 6-4 win over Grace Dawes and Patricia Huerta. Aebischer and Travica improved to 1-1 on the season in doubles.
 
After doubles play was finished, the two teams played singles, and the Pack would pick up two wins in singles.
 
In singles, senior Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District of Columbia) earned a win at the No. 2 spot in a third-set tiebreaker over Daniela Casique, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0. Brienza improved to 2-2 on the season in singles.
 
The Pack's other win in singles came at the No. 3 spot in the line-up as senior Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) moved to 3-3 on the season following her straight sets (6-2, 6-1) win over Dawes.
 
Bethel won the other four singles matches on the day as the Pack managed to win 19 games in the four singles matches, including Travica falling in a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 4 spot to Jenna Mahoney. Travica fell 6-2, 0-6, 1-0.
 
At the No. 5 spot, senior Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) won seven games as she fell 6-4, 6-3 to Huerta.
 
Aebischer suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss at the No. 1 spot to Daniela Herrera, while freshman MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) fell 6-0, 6-2 to Kate Rowland.
