ThunderWolves lose dual at No. 13 Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. (February 1, 2025) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team went on the road Saturday and faced No. 13 Western Colorado, falling 40-6 to the Mountaineers in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) dual at Paul Wright Gym.

For the Pack, Eddie Bowman (Fr., Trinidad, Colo.) won his bout at 133 and Remington Winmill (R-So., Wendell, Idaho) was victorious at 184 pounds.

In the first match at 125, CSU Pueblo forfeit the match and WCU was awarded six team points early.

At 133, Bowman faced Devin Gomez and in the first period, Bowman got the first take down and would hold in control for about twenty seconds before an escape was earned from Gomez.

Bowman got another take down midway through the period and Gomez would add another escape before getting a three-point take down with less than ten seconds and brought the score to 6-5 through the first period in favor of Bowman.

In period two, Gomez started on bottom and earned a one-point escape and the score went unchanged 6-5 at the end of the period.

The final period, Bowman elected for the bottom position and quickly escaped and took a two-point lead. Bowman was called for stalling twice and as a result, Gomez was given two points.

The Pack freshman earned two more take downs and two more escapes for Gomez was not enough as Bowman came away with a 13-9 decision and three team points for the Pack.

At 141, AJ Gunn (Jr., Evergreen, Colo.) was pinned by Ian Chavez in the first period, adding to the lead.

In the 149 pound match, Kevin Boston (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) faced No. 3 ranked Dean Noble and battled through an action packed first period that saw just one take down after the duo went toe-to-toe throughout the period.

Noble had the choice to start the second period and elected the bottom position and escaped within ten seconds and built a 4-0 lead.

With just over a minute in the period, Boston was called for a second stalling and Noble was given one point.

Trailing 5-0 going to the third and final period, Boston chose neutral to start. Boston was called for another stall midway through the period.

Noble was able to catch Boston and quickly earned a take down that resulted in a pin fall with 38 seconds on the clock.

In the 157 bout, Cyruss Meeks (Sr., Casper, Wyo.) faced Vincent Cabral and went down 3-0 in the first period after Cabral was able to earn a take down with just over a minute to wrestle.

Period two seen Meeks start on bottom trailing by three and he was able to find his feet and got his escape point.

In the third, Cabral began on bottom and earned an escape for a 4-2 lead.

Meeks had his opportunity and was unable to get the take down before the end of the period and match, falling by two points.

At 165, Aaron Concepcion (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) battled against Walker Heckendorf and Concepcion got the first take down in under a minute before an escape by the Mountaineer wrestler.

In the second period and a 3-1 lead for Concepcion, Heckendorf earned a take down and seconds later earned a pin fall win at 2:24.

Solomon Arnds-Volcin (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) faced his toughest opponent of the season in No. 1 ranked Cole Hernandez and Arnds-Volcin wrestled tough.

Hernandez earned a take down with over a minute to go and Arnds-Volcin was able to earn an escape point with 50 seconds in the first.

Another late take down and a 4-point near fall for Hernandez gave him a 10-1 lead before Arnds-Volcin got an escape before the end of the period.

Starting on bottom and trailing 10-2, Arnds-Volcin got another quick escape making it 10-3.

Hernandez scored another take down and another escape made the score 13-4 with under thirty seconds left in the period.

Arnds-Volcin was unable to hold control of Hernandez to start the third and Hernandez got an escape and went ahead 14-4.

Hernandez earned another take down with less than twenty seconds and would finish with a 18-4 win and with a bonus point being added for riding time.

Donn Greer (Jr., Soledad, Calif.) wrestled at 184 against Cole Gray and despite numerous chances to make a move from Greer, a scoreless first period was the result.

Starting period two, Gray elected the bottom position and got an escape early and with just over a minute to go, Gray earned a three-point take down and built a 4-0 lead.

Later in the period, Greer earned an escape and got a take down of his own with thirty seconds to play, tying the match at 4-4.

After a quick injury timeout for Gray, Greer was given the bottom position to resume the action and earned another escape and held a 5-4 lead going to the third.

Choosing the bottom to start the third, Greer was able to escape and got himself a 6-4 lead with 90 seconds to go.

With just over a minute to go, Gray took down Greer and put him on his back and ended with a third period win by pin.

In the 197 pound match, Winmill wrestled against Sage Harrison.

Harrison earned a quick take down that was followed by an escape for Winmill.

Later in the first, Winmill earned the take down and took a 4-3 lead before Harrison got the escape with over a minute in the first period.

Winmill chose the bottom to start the second and got an escape for the one point advantage.

Tied 5-5 going to the third, neutral was chosen to start and Winmill got a take down with 65 seconds on the clock for a three-point lead.

Winmill was hit with a stall and he was able to maintain ride time for a 9-6 bonus point win.

At 285, Henry Sturn (So., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) wrestled against Riley Dean-Butt.

Despite a lot of action in the first period, neither wrestler would score.

Starting period two, Dean-Butt chose to be on bottom and he would earn the escape with most of the match to play.

Sturn wrestled with strong defense for most of the period before being called for another stalling call and gave Dean-Butt a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Sturn chose bottom and quickly escaped to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Pack heavyweight earned a take down midway through and held a 4-2 lead before a two-point reversal tied the match at 4-4 at the end of the period, sending the match to overtime.

Dean-Butt ended the match with a take down 24 seconds into overtime, taking home the 7-4 win.
