RAPID CITY, S.D. – Colorado State University Pueblo men's basketball forced overtime here Saturday afternoon against South Dakota Mines, but the ThunderWolves were outscored 16-9 in the overtime period en route to suffering an 84-77 setback to the Hardrockers in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the King Center.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves fell to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC, while South Dakota Mines fell to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The Pack, who trailed by as much at 14 at 37-23 with 2:11 left in the first half, took its first lead since early in the game following two free throws by redshirt sophomore forward
Ty Adam (Severance, Colo./Severance) with 6:28 left in regulation and the Pack lead grew to 60-57 following two free throws by junior guard
Dylan Sanders (Aurora, Colo./Pearl River CC) with 5:32 remaining in regulation.
Following that lead by the Pack, the Hardrockers used a 10-5 run to take a 67-63 lead with 2:47 left in regulation, before the Pack scored five of the final six points to force overtime.
In the overtime session, South Dakota Mines scored the first seven points and led by seven points on several occasions as the Hardrockers scored 16 points in overtime to secure the win and drop the Pack to 0-7 all-time in Rapid City against the Hardrockers.
Sophomore guard/forward
Jordan Blair (Keller, Texas/Keller Central) and redshirt guard
Jaden Kennis (Windsor, Colo./MSU Denver) did all he could do to keep the Pack in the game as those two finished with 23 points each, both of which were career highs for both players. In addition to the 23 points, Blair also pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds for his first career double-double.
In addition, Adam added 12 points, while Sanders finished with nine points and four rebounds in the loss.
South Dakota Mines was led offensively by Jason Lee as he finished with a game-high 30 points and added six assists, while Ryan Sweeney tallied 23 points and Gavin Soukup added 14 points off the bench in the victory.
For the game, the Pack, who trailed 37-30 at the half, shot 45 percent from the field and were 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) from the 3-point line, while South Dakota Mines finished the game shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from the 3-point line.
The Pack, though, held a 25-13 edge from the free throw line as the Pack shot 22-for-26 (84.6 percent) at the line. SDM finished the game 8-for-13 at the line, with nine of those free throw coming in the second half.
South Dakota Mines held a 32-26 edge on the boards and the Pack forced the Hardrockers into 17 turnovers that led to 18 points. South Dakota Mines, though, scored 26 points off the Pack's 15 turnovers.
The Pack will look to rebound next Saturday, Dec. 20 as they travel to Laredo, Texas, for a 1 p.m. MT non-conference game against Texas A&M-International.
