PUEBLO, Colo. — Colorado State University Pueblo men's basketball opened the season 4-0 for the second consecutive year and third time in the last four seasons after using a dominant first half and a balanced offensive attack to post an 84-63 victory over North American in Massari Arena.
With the win, the Pack moves to 4-0 on the season, while North American fell to 3-1 on the season.
One night after scoring a season-high 91 points in a 91-48 win over Kansas Christian, the Pack offense scored 85 points and had seven players score seven or more points, including placing three players in double figures.
Sophomore guard/forward
Jordan Blair (Keller, Texas/Keller Central) paced the ThunderWolves with 17 points and eight rebounds, while redshirt junior guard
Jaden Kennis (Windsor, Colo./MSU Denver) added 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists and redshirt sophomore guard/forward
Corbin Garver (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) has 12 points.
The Pack seized control midway through the first half with a 14–0 run and never looked back, turning a tight 12–10 game into a 29–12 advantage. CSU Pueblo's defensive pressure and transition game fueled the surge, leading to 16 first-half fast-break points and 12 points off turnovers before halftime. The Pack carried a 44–26 lead into the break after shooting 51.5 percent from the field and connecting on six three-pointers.
CSU Pueblo's depth again proved decisive, with the bench contributing 30 points and sparking multiple scoring runs. Junior guard
Cash Callaway (Pasco, Wash./South Mountain CC) delivered eight points in just over 12 minutes off the bench, while freshman guard
Bryce Riehl (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) also had eight points off the bench and junior forward
Kyren Allen (Commerce City, Colo./Trinidad State) had seven points and five rebounds off the bench.
North American, who opened its weekend trip to the Centennial State with a 69-64 loss on Friday at Colorado Christian, was led offensively by Naheim Northern, who posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. For the game, Northern American pulled down 17 offensive boards that led to a 21-11 edge in second chance points.
In addition to Northern, Joseph Cormier and Kemani Wilson each had 10 points and Syncere Shaw tallied nine points and four rebounds off the bench.
The Stallions struggled to generate consistent offense as they shot just 29 percent (20-for-69) from the field and 10-for-29 (34.5 percent) from the 3-point line.
Meanwhile, the Pack finished the night shooting 47 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line. The Pack held a 21-5 edge in fast break points and held a slight 49-44 edge on the boards.
The Pack was dominant in the paint as they held a 34-18 edge in points in the paint and forced North American into 12 turnovers that led 17 points for the Pack. The Pack committed just 11 turnovers in the game, including just four after halftime.
CSU Pueblo's largest lead reached 29 points at 65-35 about seven-plus minutes in the second half following back-to-back threes from Riehl and senior guard
Sam Howery (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's). Though NAU made brief runs sparked by Northern's inside presence and Shaw's perimeter shooting, the Pack maintained control wire-to-wire in the second half, never allowing the Stallions closer than 17 points.
The Pack will look to continue its hot play to open the season as they remain at home next weekend for two games as part of a four-team Thanksgiving Classic at Massari Arena. The event will begin with a 2:30 pm. game on Friday, Nov. 28 as MSU Denver faces Eastern New Mexico, before the Pack hosts UT Permian Basin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 29, MSU Denver will face UTPB at 2:30 p.m., with the Pack facing Easter New Mexico at 5 p.m.
