Cooper and Walter Score 15 Points Each in Men's Basketball Setback at Regis

DENVER, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo men's basketball concluded its three-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip here Saturday afternoon with a 92-59 setback to Regis University at Regis Field House.

With the setback, the ThunderWolves fall to 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC, while Regis improved to 8-8 overall and 6-2 in the league. The loss was the sixth straight overall for the Pack and its fourth straight loss in league play. 

Senior forward De'Shaun Cooper (San Diego, Calif./Balboa School) and fifth-year senior guard Brevin Walter (Las Vegas, Nev./South Dakota Mines) each scored 15 points for the Pack, while junior forward Victor Lado (Louisville, Ky./Vincennes University) added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. All of Lado's points came in the second half, while all of Cooper's points came in the first half.

Cooper's 15 points moved him within 50 points of becoming the 28th member of the CSU Pueblo 1,000 Point Club as Cooper has now scored 950 career points, while Walter's 15 points pushed him within 11 points of 1,900 career points. Walter is the No. 3 active scorer in Division II as he has now tallied 1,891 career points.

Saturday's game was close early on as Regis and the Pack baskets in the opening four minutes until Regis used a 10-2 run over a span of five-plus minutes to turn an 8-all tie into an 18-10 lead. The Pack would back-to-back baskets by senior guard Armon Muldrew (Perris, Calif./San Bernardino Valley) to pull within 18-14 with 10:36 left to go in the first half. That would be as close as the Pack would get as the Rangers outscored the Pack, 31-12, over the final 10-plus minutes of the first half to take a 49-26 lead at the half. 

Cooper was the lone bright spot offensively for the Pack in the opening half as he scored 15 of the Pack's 26 first half points. After missing 10 of its first 15 shots, the Pack closed the first half shooting 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from the field and was just 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) from the 3-point line in the opening 20 minutes of the game. 

The Pack opened the second half by scoring six of the first nine points to pull within 53-32 following a lay-up by freshman forward Jake Lafferty (Bruner, Mo./Sparta) with 17:25 left in the game. Regis, though, answered back with a 10-5 run to push its lead to 63-27 with 12:55 remaining in the game. 

Following that Regis run, the Pack used a lay-up from Lado and 3-pointer from junior guard Sam Howery (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's) to cut the Rangers' lead to 63-42 with 11:55 remaining in the contest. 

The Rangers responded with a 27-13 run capped by a Jalen Brown lay-up with 1:52 left in the game to give Regis a 90-55 lead. The Pack would score four of the game's final six points with all four points coming from Lado to cap the scoring. 

After shooting 37.5 percent from the field and 11.1 percent from downtown in the first half, the Pack finished Saturday's game shooting 37 percent from field (22-for-59) and was 3-for-18 (17 percent) from the 3-point. The 59 points scored was the second lowest of the season for the Pack as they tallied a season-low 52 points in their 73-52 loss to Alaska-Anchorage at the Hoops in Hawai'i Holiday Classic on Dec. 19. 

While the Pack shot 37 percent from the field and 17 percent from the 3-point line, Regis shot 56 percent from the field and 30 percent from long distance in the game. The Rangers shot 60 percent from the field in the first half as they led 49-26 at the half. The 49 first half points for Regis are the most allowed this season by the Pack in the opening half.

During the current six game losing streak, the Pack is averaging 64 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from the field and 28 percent from the 3-point line and is allowing 84.3 points per game and their foes are shooting 52 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line. The Pack are being outscored by nearly 21 points per game. 

After being outscored 49-26 in the first half, the Pack scored 33 second half point, while Regis scored 43 points after halftime.

Regis had six players score in double figures on the game as Chase Mayo Harmon led the way with 16 points, while Kobe Sanders scored 15 points. Eddy Egun and Brown each had 13 points, while Trey Bryant added 12 points and Ty Cox had 11 points.

The Pack were outrebounded 36-30 as Lafferty led the way with eight rebounds for Pack, while Lado added five rebounds. Regis was paced by eight boards from Brown.

Regis held a 56-38 edge in points in the paint and also a 29-13 edge in points off the bench. 

The Pack, who committed eight turnovers in the first half that led to 10 points, finished the game with 13 turnovers that led to 14 points for the Rangers. Regis had eight turnovers in the game and the Pack scored eight points off those turnovers. 

Regis also finished with 21 assists and three blocks, while the Pack had seven assists and one block. 

The Pack was also 12-for-19 (63.2 percent) from the free throw line, while Regis was 13-for-15 (86.7 percent) at the line. 

The Pack will return home next week to begin a four-game homestand at Massari Arena. The homestand will begin with a 7:30 p.m. game on Thursday, Jan. 24 against Adams State, before hosting New Mexico Highlands for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 26.
