ThunderWolves sweep Wednesday RMAC duals

ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 15, 2025) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling squad swept a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals against San Francisco State and Adams State on Wednesday at ASU's Plachy Hall.

The ThunderWolves defeated SFSU 34-6 and beat ASU in come-from-behind fashion 22-19.

In the first match of the day at 125, Rhys Sellers (Jr., Gallup, NM) pinned his opponent Evan Kusumoto at 3:59 and gave the ThunderWolves an early 6-0 lead.

At 133 pounds, Eddie Bowman (Fr., Trinidad, Colo.) beat Zach Wright by an 11-3 decision and garnered three more team points. In the bout, Bowman earned three take downs and two escapes to come away with the victory.

Hayden Tuma (Fr., Boise, Idaho) competed at 141 pounds against Johnny Lopez and fell by an 8-5 decision. Tuma trailed 5-4 after the first period and earned an escape and take down.

In the final two periods, Tuma earned one more escape point and Lopez tallied three more points including a two-point reversal to come away with the decision win.

At 149 pounds, reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week, Kevin Boston (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) outlasted Sean Yamasaki 3-2 in a hard fought match.

The match went scoreless through two periods before Boston earned a take down and avoided a counter attack to seal the one-point victory.

Cyruss Meeks (Sr., Casper, Wyo.) fell 8-1 against Zane Stoddard at the 157 pound match-up.

In the 165 pound match, Aaron Concepcion (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) earned a win by fall in just :22 seconds over Illia Borshchenko and extended the ThunderWolves lead in the dual.

Solomon Arnds-Volcin (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) won by forfeit at 174 pounds before Donn Greer (Jr., Soledad, Calif.) took down Kweli Hernandez-Maitre by a 4-3 decision.

The scoring began in the second period after an escape by Hernandez-Maitre after starting in the bottom position that was quickly dissolved by Greer after he earned a take down. SF State earned one more escape before the final period. Greer scored an escape in the third period before holding on for the one-point dub.

Remington Winmill (R-So., Wendell, Idaho) wrestled a tough match against Gavin Funk and won 3-0 after a second period escape and riding time and two stalls called against Funk helped Winmill to victory.

In the final bout at 285, Henry Sturn (So., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) defeated Felipe De Matos in dominating fashion, winning by major, 17-5 and earned four additional team points.

Adams State Recap
The first bout pitted Sellers against Isaiah Gamez at 125 pounds and Sellers was unable to overcome two stalling calls in the second period and fell 4-3.

Sellers was able to earn a take down early in the first period before an escape was earned by Gamez before two stalling calls against Sellers in the second half set up an exciting third period.

Holding a one point lead going to the third period, Sellers started on top and Gamez was able to escape for one point. He was later awarded another point at the end of the match for riding time for the one point victory.

In the second match, Bowman wrestled against Adam Concepcion and the two would battle to a 1-1 tie through three periods and in overtime, Bowman recorded a take down with under 30 seconds on the clock to earn the 4-1 victory.

At 141, AJ Gunn (Jr., Evergreen, Colo.) dropped a 13-3 major against Angel Flores.

Boston pushed his win streak to eight in a row after and defeated Kieran Thompson by a 7-1 decision at 149 pounds. In the match, Boston scored two take downs and came away with a 7-1 win and three team points for the Pack.

In the 157 match-up, Meeks fell in the final seconds of the second period against Aaden Valdez and was pinned at 4:57 of the second period.

At 165, Concepcion was pinned at 4:48 against Daniel Long. In the next match at 174, Arnds-Volcin won a 13-9 after a beating Daniel Long.

In the 184 match, Greer scored a 12-6 win over Sergio Zaragoza by a 12-6 score and in the 197 pound bout, Winmill beat Wil Aucoin 8-5 in SV-1 and garnered six points.

At 285, Sturn beat Abraham Garcia by major decision 14-1 and sealed the win for the ThunderWolves.
