EDMOND, Okla. (September 21, 2024) - No. 15 Colorado State University Pueblo closed out a weekend trip to Oklahoma with a 2-1 defeat over Rogers State on Saturday at Eagle Soccer Field on the campus of Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, Oklahoma.
The ThunderWolves scored two goals in the second half from
Joey Joiner (Sr., Westminster, Colo.) in the 61' and
Giancarlo Pretto (Sr., Lajeado Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil) a short two minutes later in minute sixty-three to help the Pack to their second win of the weekend.
The Pack started the match the first one to each loose ball and fired the game's first three shots and one corner, in the opening twenty minutes. Joiner registered the first shot on goal in the contest during the 5th minute.
Starting in the 27th minute, CSU Pueblo earned three corners in a five minute span. The best scoring chance came during the second corner and shots from
Jack Pascoe (Sr., Barry, Wales) and
Luke Smith (Sr., Bolton, England) inside the six-yard box were saved by Rogers State goalkeeper Declan Viljoen.
At the break, the ThunderWolves led 5-2 in shots and held a 4-1 advantage in corners.
Starting period two, the Pack offense earned two more corners which resulted in two more shots to put the Hillcats on the defense in the ThunderWolves attacking zone.
CSU Pueblo's efforts were rewarded in the 61' when
Ignatius DeMark (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) passed the ball ahead to Joiner who was able to finish and give the Pack a 1-0 lead.
Just over one minute passed before another Pack corner was earned and "corner specialist"
Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) kicked the ball to the center of the box and the tallest member on the ThunderWolves lineup, Pretto, was able to connected a header goal for the two goal lead.
The ThunderWolves play at midfield and on defense was stellar for majority of the match and allowed six total shots. Rogers State was able to get on the board during the 82'.
Ryan Nun (So., Broomfield, Colo.) brings home the win and made one save against two SOG.
CSU Pueblo (5-1) will continue nonconference play on the road next week and will face No. 9 Fort Lewis on Thursday, in a rematch of the 2023 RMAC Conference Tournament Championship.
The ThunderWolves return home on Sunday, Sept. 29 and face-off against UCCS in the last match before conference play begins.
