PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team concluded its brief two-match homestand here Saturday with a 7-0 setback to Colorado Mesa University at the Pueblo Tennis Center.
Saturday's match was originally scheduled for Sunday morning at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Center, but high winds in the area forced the ThunderWolves to move the match indoors and switch the day to Saturday.
With the setback, the Pack fall to 0-10 overall, while Colorado Mesa improves to 10-13 overall.
Saturday's match was the second of three this weekend for the Pack as they opened the homestand with a 6-1 loss at Stanislaus State and concludes the weekend with a 1:30 p.m. match in Denver on Sunday against MSU Denver.
Saturday's action began with doubles play as the Pack won six games against the Mavericks.
CMU opened doubles with a 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot and then sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. The Pack's No. 1 team of sophomore
Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) and freshman
Mariangel Nunez (Weston, Fla./Unidad Educative Padre Claret) fell 6-4 to CMU's duo of Issy Coman and Makenna Livingston.
With Mesa holding a 1-0 lead in the match, the teams turned their attention to singles play. The Mavericks won all six of the singles matches, but the Pack was able to win 23 total games.
Livingston gave CMU a 2-0 lead in the match following her 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles spot over junior
Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of the District of Columbia).
Nunez and Devyn Rodriguez faced each other at the No. 3 spot and Nunez kept the opening set close as Rodriguez won 6-4, but Rodriguez would collect a 6-0 win in the second set to seal her victory at No. 3 singles.
Aebischer would manage to win five games at the No. 1 spot against Coman as Coman defeated the Pack's No. 1 player, 6-4, 6-1. Coman's win sewed up the match win for the Mavericks.
Kristen Thomas picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over junior
Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) to give Mesa a 5-0 lead in the match.
