GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis closed out its 2023-23 season here Friday afternoon with a hard-fought 7-0 setback to Colorado Mesa at the Elliott Tennis Center on the Colorado Mesa campus.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves, who are coached by
Chris Roman, conclude the season with an 0-12 overall record, while CMU improves to 11-13 on the year.
Friday's match marked the final match of the Pack's lone senior,
Sonrisa Bustamante (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central), of her collegiate career. Bustamante played No. 6 singles in Friday's match.
The two teams began Friday's match by playing doubles. The Mavericks swept all three doubles match as the Pack won a total of four games in doubles.
CMU first match win came at the No. 2 doubles spot as Devyn Rodriguez and Julianna Campos defeated the Pack's duo of junior
Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of the District of Columbia) and junior
Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch), 6-1.

Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) and freshman
Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) fell 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to Delia Maier and Kristen Thomas.
The Pack's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore
Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) and freshman
Mariangel Nunez (Weston, Fla./Unidad Educativa Padre Claret) fell 6-1 to CMU's duo of Izzy Corman and Makenna Livingston.
With CMU holding a 1-0 lead in the match following doubles play, the teams turned their focus to playing singles.
All six singles matches were highly contested with two of the matches at the No. 1 and No. 4 spot going to a third-set tiebreaker. In singles action, the Pack won a total of 37 games against the Mavs.
The Mavs took a 2-0 lead in the match with Thomas' 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Pendon.
CMU would take a 3-0 lead in the match as Maier collected a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Bustamante.
The Mavericks sealed the match with its 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles by Livingston over Brienza.
Nunez, who finished the 2023-24 season with a 4-7 record in singles play, would fall 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot to Rodriguez to give the Mavs their fifth point of the match.
The next two singles matches went to third-set tiebreakers.
At the No. 4 singles spot, Garcia battled it out with Campos as Garcia won the first set, 6-4, before Campos won the second set, 6-1 to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Campos and Garcia played it close until Campos was able to pull out a 10-6 win.
Aebischer and Coman went toe-to-toe at the No. 1 singles spot as Aebischer won the opening set, 6-4, while Coman won the second set 6-3 to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Coman would prevail, 10-3.
