PUEBLO, Colo. (March 3, 2024) - Colorado State University Pueblo wrestler
Cyruss Meeks (Jr., Casper, Wyo.) punched his ticket to the NCAA Division II National Championships after placing second at 157 pounds at the Super Region VI Tournament held at Massari Arena.
In his postseason debut,
Solomon Arnds-Volcin (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished in sixth place at 174 pounds and at 184,
Donn Greer (So., Soledad, Calif.) earned a spot on the podium with his fourth place finish.
With his runner-up placing, Meeks advances to Nationals which is set to take place March 15-16 at Hartman Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
His journey through the 157 weight class included a second round dramatic 8-5 SV-1 win over Nico Carrasco from Adams State to move on to the semifinals.
In his next outing against Basil Othman from San Francisco State, Meeks advanced to the championship match with a 5-4 win.
In the final against top-seeded Ryan Wilson from Western Colorado, Meeks battled throughout and fell 5-4, finishing second.
Arnds-Volcin venture through the 174 pound bracket included a second round loss 8-3 against Wyatt Reisz from Colorado School of Mines.
On the backside and his next match, Arnds-Volcin faced Adams State's Samuel Loera, winning the match 7-1 and moved on to face Colorado Mesa's Gus Dalton and fell by maj. decision 10-1.
In the fifth place match, he battled against Reisz for a second time on the day and this time wrestled him to a 4-1 SV-1 loss and finished in sixth place.
At 184, Greer suffered a first round tech-fall loss against top seeded Billy Higgins from Nebraska-Kearney.
On the backside and in his next outing, Greer defeated Owen Gudmun from Simon Fraser 5-3 and moved on to face Mines' Mason Diel, winning the match 6-4 with the third place match next up.
In the battle for a ticket to nationals against Colorado Mesa's Jason Bynarowicz, Greer lost in a first period fall at 2:51, finishing in fourth place in his bracket.
Wrestling for the final time in a CSU Pueblo singlet,
Elijah Valdez (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 0-2 at 165 pounds and
Ben Gould (Sr., Canyon Country, Calif.) finished 1-2 at 197 pounds.
Valdez lost a overtime second round match 4-1 SV-1 against SFSU's Kyle Botelho and in his next match, Valdez suffered a 4-2 setback against Nebraska-Kearney's Kaden Hart.
For Gould, he took home a 7-1 win over Sage Harrison from Western Colorado and in his second round match against top-seeded Jackson Kinsella from Nebraska-Kearney, Gould lost the match 8-2.
In his next match against Ben Tonnesson from Adams State, Gould fell by tech fall 19-4.
In other matches for the ThunderWolves,
Tyler Hamm (Fr., Chandler, Ariz.) finished 1-2 at 133 pounds. His victory came on the backside of the bracket, a 15-0 tech fall win over Jagvir Grewal from Simon Fraser.
Decker Milender (Fr., Superior, Mont.) wrestled at 125,
AJ Gunn (So., Evergreen, Colo.) competed at 133,
Anthony Nichols (R-Sr., Grand Coulee, Wash.) wrestled at 149 and
Henry Sturn (Fr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) battled at 285 pounds for the ThunderWolves and went 0-2 in their respective weight brackets.
