PUEBLO, Colo. (March 29, 2024) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team swept a Good Friday doubleheader over Fort Lewis College on Friday and secured the series win and after taking 3-of-4 in the series.
On the day, Pack pitching was the story of the day as the hurlers gave up just two runs in two games and allowed eleven hits.
Lucy Carney (Jr., Lakewood, Colo.) picked up the win after throwing a complete game shutout in game one and held FLC to three hits.
In game two,
Marissa Robertson (So., Rocklin, Calif.) scattered eight hits and allowed two runs and finished with one strikeout.
Offensively,
Darleen Falcon (So., Moreno Valley, Calif.) recorded her first home run of the year during the second inning of game two.
Caitlyn Cole led the team and recorded four hits on Sunday.
Game one recap
In the first game, a second pitcher's dual of the weekend ensued between Carney and FLC's Amiee Shanks. The duo combined for a shutout through three innings before the Pack broke the scoreless affair.
CSU Pueblo got on the board during the bottom of the fourth after taking advantage of a defensive error on a single from
Madelyn Huerta (So., Azusa, Calif.), allowing Cole to score from second base.
Later in the inning,
Taylor Brower (So., Vacaville, Calif.) hit a sac fly and plated the second run of the inning.
A third run scored in the bottom of the sixth after Huerta hit a double with one out and she would score in the next at-bat, a triple hit by
Ashley Tosh (Jr., Fremont, Calif.).
In the game, Carney pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning and was able to coast through the Skyhawk lineup over the final three innings.
With the win Carney improves to 1-2 on the year.
Game two recap
CSU Pueblo jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on the solo home run from Falcon and an error on the defensive allowed the second run to later cross.
Fort Lewis evened the score in their at-bat in the third on a two-run shot over the scoreboard in left.
The ThunderWolves got one run back in their next chance on offense thanks to a fielder's choice RBI hit by
Raelynn Rogers (Jr., Surprise, Ariz.).
Leading 3-1 going to the fourth, Robertson gave up a hit before retiring the side and get the Pack back to the dugout.
The Pack's fourth run came during the home half of the fourth after
Emma Case (Fr., Loveland, Colo.) hit a solo shot with two outs and built a 4-1 lead going to the fifth.
Over the final three innings, Robertson and Co. gave up four hits and four walks but top performances defensively at third base and in the outfield, kept the Skyhawks at bay and from scoring another run.
Robertson improves her record to 4-8 on the year.
On deck
CSU Pueblo (14-25, 12-16 RMAC) remains at home next week and welcomes Colorado School of Mines and begins a four-game RMAC series starting Saturday at Noon at Rawlings Softball Complex.
