Women's Tennis Concludes Spring Break Trip With Battle Against No. 5 Midwestern State

Midwestern State Match Was Second of Day for ThunderWolves

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis concluded its spring break road trip here Tuesday afternoon by playing a hard-fought match at No. 5 ranked Midwestern State at the MSU Tennis Center. Midwestern State earned a 7-0 win in the match.
 
Tuesday's match with Midwestern State was the second of the day for the ThunderWolves as they opened the day with a 7-0 setback Tuesday morning at Dallas Baptist.
 
The Pack fell to 0-8 on the season with Tuesday's two setbacks and went 1-3 on its four match spring break trip with the win being a 4-3 victory in an exhibition match on Monday at Collin County Community College.
 
Midwestern State, who improved to 10-3 overall and remained undefeated at home with a 5-0 mark, opened Tuesday's match by sweeping all three doubles matches against the Pack. The Pack won a total of three games among the three matches.
 
MSU opened doubles with a 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot over junior Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) and freshman Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate).
 
The next doubles win for the Mustangs came at the No. 1 spot as sophomore Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) and freshman Mariangel Nunez (Weston, Fla./Unidad Educativa "Padre Claret") fell 6-1 to Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga, who are ranked 33rd nationally in Division II.
 
Junior Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of the District of Columbia) and junior Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) fell 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to Shreya Chakraborty and Hannah Yip.
 
In singles, the Pack managed to take 14 games off the nationally-ranked Mustangs, including No. 1 and No. 2 singles teams winning 12 of those 14 games in the match.
 
MSU would open singles play by winning by identical scores of 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots to seal its match victory.
 
The Mustangs would score its fifth point of the match at No. 4 singles as Nunez suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Sofia Giraldo.
 
The final two singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 were the most competitive of the match.
 
Aebischer battled through two competitive sets against Binzari, who is ranked 38th nationally in Division II, at the No. 1 spot as she fell 6-3, 6-2.
 
Brienza battled with nationally 32nd-ranked Yip at the No. 2 singles spot. Yip would hold off Brienza 6-4 in the first set, before suffering a 6-3 loss in the second set.
 
The Pack will return to action on Thursday, April 4, as they host Stanislaus State for a 1 p.m. match at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex.
