PUEBLO, Colo. (March 16, 2024) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team returned home to the friendly confines of Rawlings Sports Complex and welcomed MSU Denver for a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series and dropped the first two games of the series, 14-6 in the opener and dropped a 6-5 decision in game two.
On the day,
Caitlyn Cole (So., Merced, Calif.) and
Madelyn Huerta (So., Azusa, Calif.) led the ThunderWolves with four hits apiece. Cole recorded two home runs, a double, 5 RBI and scored five runs for the Pack.
Emma Case (Fr., Loveland, Colo.) and
Raelynn Rogers (Jr., Surprise, Ariz.) both finished with two hits and a run scored.
In the circle,
Marissa Robertson (So., Rocklin, Calif.) went the distance in game two and gave up six runs on 11 hits along with four strikeouts and a walk.
Game one recap
In the opener, MSU Denver scored one run in the first at-bat before the ThunderWolves went on offense and scored four runs on four hits in their first time at the plate and capitalized on a pair of errors against the Roadrunners.
The inning was highlighted by a RBI-double from Cole and she would come around to score on a wild pitch. The other two runs came by way of an error on the infield.
MSU Denver plated two more runs in the next inning and the Pack responded with a run in their half, thanks to a solo homer hit from Cole with one out.
The Roadrunners cut the lead to one with an RBI single up the middle to put the score at 5-4.
After a scoreless fourth inning, MSU Denver put up five runs on four hits against one Pack error and built a 9-5 lead.
CSU Pueblo scored another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and MSU Denver would score five more runs over the next two innings to seal the 14-6 victory.
McKenna James (So., Windsor, Colo.) suffered the loss and falls to 5-10 on the year. She allowed nine runs and seven earned on 10 hits.
Game two recap
Starting game two, CSU Pueblo quickly jumped ahead with a run in the first on another solo shot from Cole with one out. The Pack added four more runs in their next at bat on three hits including a two-run single by Cole and another RBI-single hit by Huerta.
MSU Denver evened the scored at 5-5 in their next at-bat and put up five runs on six hits. The Roadrunners slugged two home runs and a double in the frame.
Over the last four innings, two hits was recorded between the two teams and MSU Denver manufactured the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh and scored on a throwing error against the Pack.
In their last chance to tie the game, CSU Pueblo was retired in order, falling 14-6.
Robertson was tagged with the loss and falls to 2-5 on the year.

The teams will wrap the series with another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at Rawlings Sports Complex.
