Meeks battles in trip to nationals

PARK CITY, Kan. (March 15, 2024) - Colorado State University Pueblo wrestler Cyruss Meeks (Jr., Casper, Wyo.) made his first career appearance at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and went 1-2 in his matches on Friday at Hartman Arena.

In his debut in the preliminary round against Cooper Warshel from Pitt-Johnstown, and after a scoreless first period, Meeks elected the bottom position to start the second period and he quickly was able to earn an escape in under ten seconds.

Later in the period, Meeks was called for his first stalling caution and immediately after, Warshel went on the attack and earned a take down with just over a minute left in the second frame.

Another stall penalty was called against Meeks and as a result, a 1-point penalty was awarded to Warshel.

Trailing 4-1 entering the final period, Meeks started on top and Warshel escaped and shortly after Meeks began his offense and earned a 3-point take down to cut the deficit down to 5-4. 

Warshel quickly got out from under and held a 6-4 lead before taking a shot at Meeks and garnered another take down with 11 seconds left to play and with riding time beyond the one-minute mark, Warshel was given another point, finishing the bout at 10-5.

In his next outing against Jack Tangen from Landor, Meeks went ahead 3-1 with a first period take down and earned a pair of escape points in the second to take a 5-4 lead going to the final period.

In the frame, a single escape point was earned by Tangen to send the match into overtime.

In the first overtime, a scoreless affair led to two 30-second overtime periods and each wrestler earned an escape point but Meeks held on to his riding time and clocked it over the one-minute mark to earn the important 1-point bonus point and came away with a 7-6 victory.

In the third match of the day, Meeks faced off against UIndy's Owen Zablocki and another scoreless first period led to Meeks starting the second period on bottom and getting an escape for the 1-0 lead.

Zablocki earned an escape and a take down in the third period to seal the 4-1 victory.

Meeks ends his season with a 19-14 record. This season, Meeks recorded a season-high five-match win streak on December 2 at the Bob Smith Open in Hays, Kansas.
