Men's Lacrosse Opens Road Schedule With Setback to Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo men's lacrosse hit the road for the first time this season here Saturday as the ThunderWolves were held to a season-low five goals in a 22-5 setback to Colorado College at Washburn Field.
 
With the setback, the Pack falls to 0-3 on the season, while Colorado College improves to 2-1.
 
In Saturday's first road contest, the Pack took 29 shots and put 11 shots on goal against the Tigers but couldn't overcome an eight goal second period by CC  as the Tigers scored 13 of the first 14 goals in the game to lead 13-1 at the half. CC took 46 shots and put 26 shots on goal in the win.
 
Sophomore attackers Kyle Parker (Hamilton, New Zealand/Northland College) and Andrew Dzubek (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Mount Saint Vincent) each scored two goals for the Pack, while the other goal came from junior midfielder Brett Woolcock (Humble, Texas/Atascocita). Dzubek also added two assists for a team-high four points in the game.
 
CC opened the game by scoring the first four goals, before the Pack prevented a shutout thanks to an unassisted goal by Dzubek with 40 seconds left in the opening period. CC would close the first period with an unassisted goal by Braydon Ellis to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.
 
The Tigers would score eight straight goals in the second period to push out to a 13-1 lead after the half. CC took 27 shots and put 17 shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes of action.
 
Parker would open the third period with back-to-back goals for the Pack to drop CC's lead to 13-3 with 8:34 left in the period. Parker's first goal came off an assist by Dzubek, while his second goal was unassisted.
 
The Tigers would get a goal by Max Carneal to stop the Pack's run to give CC a 14-3 lead with 6:35 left, but Dzubek scored a goal off an assist from sophomore defender Bergen Anderson (Lincoln, Neb./Southwest) to pull within 14-4 with 4:12 left in the period. CC would close the period with a goal by Nick Bell to push in front 15-4.
 
In the fourth period, the Tigers outscored the Pack, 7-1 to cap the scoring. The Pack's lone goal in the period was the first of the period by Woolcock off an assist by Dzubek.
 
Charlie Faldi was one of five Tigers to score multiple goals in Saturday's win as he finished with four goals and as assist. In addition to Faldi, Dylan Brown and Thomas Power each scored three goals, while Ellis and Phillip Gisler each scored two goals. Matt Hudson had three assists, while Wyatt Furda and Will Hanson each had two assists.
 
CC won the ground ball battle, 46-26 as junior midfielder Luke Mummert (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque) had five ground balls for the Pack. Ryan Trapasso had six ground balls for the Tigers.
 
Dzubek, sophomore midfielder Lane Lessley (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) and Parker combined for 20 of the Pack's 29 shots as Dzubek took nine, while Lessley took six and Parker added five. Faldi and Brown each took six shots for the Tigers.
 
Both teams had 22 turnovers in the game, but the Tigers were strong on clears as they were 17-of-18 for the game. The Pack was 11-for-12 on clears.
 
CC was also dominant in the face-off circle as they were 23-for-30 in the game, while the Pack was 7-for-30 on face-offs.
 
CC scored one of its three-man up goal opportunities, while the Pack were 0-for-3 in man-up chances.
 
Sophomore goalie Zane Lessberg (Houston, Texas/Westside) played 30 minutes in goal and allowed 13 goals and made four saves. Sophomore Connor Russell (Grand Haven, Mich../Grand Haven) and freshman Cole Rutz (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) combined to play the other 30 minutes as they allowed nine goals and made no saves.
 
CC played four different goalies in the game as Ben Anastos played the entire first half and allowed one goal and made four saves. For the game, CC's four goalies recorded six saves and allowed five goals.
 
The Pack will now take 10 days off before opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 3 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 6 in Alamosa, Colo., against Adams State.
