Softball scores seven runs on eight hits in DH finale at Regis

DENVER, Colo. (February 19, 2024) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team finished its opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series with two more games at Regis on Monday, falling in both games of the doubleheader.

The Pack lost game one 11-1 (5 inn.) and dropped the series finale 7-6 at Regis Softball Field.

On the day, Darleen Falcon (So., Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Madelyn Huerta (So., Azusa, Calif.) both recorded a pair of hits. Huerta also accounted for two runs and one RBI. 

Senior Delaney Barela (Pueblo, Colo.) hit her first home run of the season to lead off the third inning in game one.

Caitlyn Cole (So., Merced, Calif.) scored two runs and earned three walks in the two games for the Pack.

Game one recap
In the first game Monday, Regis' offense manufactured seven runs on six hits to jump in front 7-0 through two innings. 

Barela started off the next inning and hit her solo shot to left field on the first pitch she saw.

The Rangers scored two runs in each of the next two innings and the home team retired the ThunderWolves in order in three of the five innings.

In the circle, McKenna James (So., Windsor, Colo.) takes the loss and gave up seven runs and four earned and one strikeout.

Game two recap
In the series finale, CSU Pueblo's offense started fast and put up four runs in their first at-bat and took advantage of two errors against the Rangers. The inning was highlighted by a RBI-fielder's choice and the two errors allowed three more runs to cross.

The Rangers scored one run in the first and put up two more in the second to cut the lead down to 4-3 in favor of the Pack.

In the third, CSU Pueblo scored two additional runs and Cole came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher.

Huerta scored in the next at-bat, a RBI-single by Ashley Tosh (Jr., Fremont, Calif.) put the Pack ahead 6-3 going to the home half of the third.

The Pack had two runners reach safely in the fourth but they were left stranded. Over the last three innings, the ThunderWolves offense was retired in order while the Rangers scored three runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take a one-run lead.

The ThunderWolves faced four pitchers on the Rangers staff before Kylie Harpman came on during the sixth inning and did not allow a base runner.

Pack starting pitcher Lucy Carney (Jr., Lakewood, Colo.) lasted 4.0 innings and allowed five runs and three earned and finished with a strikeout and three walks.

In relief, Marissa Robertson (So., Rocklin, Calif.) was tabbed with the loss after throwing 2.0 innings and allowed two earned runs and finished with a strikeout and a walk. She falls to 1-3 on the year.
