Men's Basketball Completes Road Sweep in RMAC Play, Posts 80-75 Win at Chadron State

Road RMAC Sweep Was First for Pack Since 2017-18 Season

CHADRON, Neb. – Colorado State University Pueblo men's basketball did something that hasn't been accomplished since the 2017-18 season as the ThunderWolves collected a road sweep in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play following its 80-75 victory here Saturday evening over Chadron State at the Chicoine Events Center.

Saturday's win at Chadron State came a little over 24 hours after the Pack collected a 95-87 win at Colorado Christian to snap the Pack's season-high six game losing streak. Before this weekend, the last time the Pack swept a weekend road trip in RMAC play came on Dec. 15-16, 2017, as the Pack collected an 88-72 win at Colorado Mesa and the following night, they earned a 92-79 win at Western State (now Western Colorado).

With Saturday's win, the Pack moves to 11-13 overall and 7-11 in the RMAC, while Chadron State dropped its fourth straight game as their record falls to 11-13 overall and 8-10 in the RMAC. The victory helped pull the Pack into a two-way tie with New Mexico Highlands for ninth place in the league standings and is now one game behind Chadron State and South Dakota Mines, who are both 8-10 in the league and are in eighth place with two weeks left in the regular season.

"What a tremendous weekend for our basketball team. I thought we came together as a team and gave a total team effort in both games this weekend," CSU Pueblo head coach Matt Hammer said on the postgame radio show. "We had a lot of guys step up and make some plays, not only tonight, but last night, as well. Corbin (Garver) had a tremendous weekend on both ends of the floor."

Saturday's win, which helped the Pack average an 84-82 home loss earlier this season to the Eagles, was keyed by the offensive play of junior guard Armon Muldrew (Perris, Calif./San Bernardino Valley) tied his career high with 24 points in 40 minutes of action, while freshman guard/forward Corbin Garver (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) tallied a career-high 16 points and pulled down a career-high tying nine rebounds. Garver scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half as the Pack held a rally after halftime by the Eagles.

The third double-digit scorer for the Pack was senior guard Makiah Morris (San Diego, Calif./San Diego City College), who scored 12 points and added seven rebounds despite playing with four fouls.

Two other Pack players fell just one point shy of double figures as junior forward De'Shaun Cooper (Poway, Calif./Balboa School) and senior guard Brevin Walter (Las Vegas, Nev./South Dakota Mines) each scored nine points, while Cooper pulled down eight rebounds.

With his nine points, Walter eclipsed the 1,600-career point mark in his collegiate career as he has now scored 1,605 points in his college career as he scored 1,264 points in three seasons at South Dakota Mines and has scored 341 points this season with the Pack. He is one of 30 active NCAA Division II players that has scored over 1,600 career points.

The Pack got off to a strong start in Saturday's game as they led 9-4 just five minutes into the contest and then after trailing 11-9 at the 13:46 of the first half, the Pack used 15-8 run to push out to a 24-19 lead following a three-point play by Morris.

CSC, though, used back-to-back baskets by Bryce Latimer and Jalen Patterson to pull within 24-23 with 5:52 left in the opening half. The Pack answered the Eagles by closing the half on a 19-5 run to take a 43-28 lead at the half. That 15-point halftime lead was tied for the Pack's largest halftime lead in an RMAC game this season.

Chadron State, who outscored the Pack, 47-37 in the second half, came out of the locker room at the half and scored 13 of the first 17 points in the half to pull within 47-41 with 14:22 remaining in the game.

The Pack responded with a 7-2 run capped by two Garver free throws to take a 54-43 lead with 12 minutes left. CSC would answer back with a 24-17 run to cut the Pack's lead to 71-67 with 2:07 left in the game. The run was capped by four straight points from Latimer, who led the Eagles with 24 points.

On the Pack's ensuing trip down court following Latimer's lay-up that brought the Eagles within four points, Garver drilled a trey with 1:33 left to give the Pack a seven-point cushion at 74-67. Josh Robinson would bring the Eagles back within five at 74-68 following a dunk with 54 seconds left.

The Pack would hold off the Eagles by making six of eight free throws over the final 53 seconds of the game, including sealing the win with two free throws by Cooper with two seconds left in the game. Cooper's free throws gave the Pack an 80-75 lead. Prior to Cooper's two free throws, Latimer missed a lay-up with three seconds left that would have brought the Eagles within a point at 78-77.

In addition to Latimer's 24 points, Patterson added 16 points off the bench and Robinson tallied 12 points and seven rebounds. In the previous meeting earlier this season, Robinson had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the Eagles' 84-82 win in Massari Arena.

The Pack finished the game with a 40-27 edge on the boards, but lost the turnover battle, 12-7 to the Eagles. The Eagles also blocked nine shots in the game, including five by Julio Phipps.

For the game, the Pack shot 49 percent from the field, but was just 4-for-15 (26.7 percent) from the 3-point line, while Chadron State shot 49 percent from the field and made just four of its 15 3-point shot attempts.

The Pack also was strong at the free throw line as they went 20-for-27 (74.1 percent), including a 15-for-19 effort at the line in the second half. CSC was just 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) at the line.

CSU Pueblo led for a little over 37 minutes in the game, while CSC led for just 42 seconds in the contest.

The Pack will return home next weekend (Feb. 23-24) as they close their 2023-24 home schedule with RMAC contests on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. against Westminster and a 6 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 24 against ninth-ranked Colorado Mesa. Prior to Saturday's game with Colorado Mesa, the Pack will honor its two seniors – Makiah Morris and Isaiah Morris – in a pregame ceremony. The Pack picked up a 93-78 win at Westminster on Jan. 6 and suffered a hard-fought 94-82 loss at then 14th-ranked Colorado Mesa on Jan. 5.
