Pack wrestling takedown Grizzlies

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 14, 2024) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team put together a string of seven consecutive match victories en route to a 24-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual win over Adams State on Wednesday inside Massari Arena.

CSU Pueblo's Anthony Nichols (R-Sr., Grand Coulee, Wash.), Cyruss Meeks (Jr., Casper, Wyo.), Elijah Valdez (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), Solomon Arnds-Volcin (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), Donn Greer (So., Soledad, Calif.), Ben Gould (Sr., Canyon Country, Calif.) and Henry Sturn (Fr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) all picked up wins on the mat.

Nichols began the streak at 149 and bested Travis Vialpando 6-2 in their match-up. The wrestlers went to a scoreless first period before Vialpando earned an escape point in the next period to take a 1-0 lead. Nichols went to work quickly to start the third period after starting on the bottom position and earned a two-point reversal to take his first lead.

Later in the period, Vialpando earned a second point after a stalling call against Nichols. The call caused Nichols to ignite his offense and he sealed the win with another takedown.

At 157, Meeks won his third dual in a row after battling Nicolas Carrasco to a 5-1 victory. The pair went scoreless through the first period and Carrasco scored the first point off an escape in period two before Meeks went on the attack and earned a three-point takedown to hold a 3-1 advantage going to the last period.

In the third, Meeks elected the bottom position and earned an escape point and would hold on for the win and adding three more team points.

Valdez was dominant in his outing against Hunter "Tab" Smith at 165 pounds and scored seven takedowns through two periods and earned a 21-6 tech fall win.

At 174, Arnds-Volcin had a hard-fought battle with Samuel Loera III and came away with a thrilling 2-0 victory.

Both wrestlers were unable to earn takedown points through the seven minute battle and Arnds-Volcin controlled the second period on top, not allowing Loera III to escape.

Earning the full 2:00 riding time entering the third period, Arnds-Volcin was able to escape from for one point and with the riding time still above the 1-minute mark, he earned a bonus riding time point for the 2-nil victory.

In the next bout at 184, Greer faced Sergio Zaragoza and earned four takedown points and one bonus point to take home a 13-5 major decision and four more team points to the ThunderWolves.

Gould was next on the docket at 197 and wrestled his opponent, Benjamin Tonnessen in a 4-1 match in favor of Gould.

Gould went down 1-0 through two periods before he earned a three-point takedown and would ride out the final period to get a bonus point.

In his first dual in front of his home crowd, Sturn shutout his opponent Wil Aucoin 4-0 with an overtime win.

The match began at 125 pounds and Decker Milender (Fr., Superior, Mont.) suffered a first period fall (1:24) against Isaiah Gamez. At 133, Freshman Tyler Hamm (Chandler, Ariz.) lost a 13-4 battle against AJ Van Matre.

The next match-up at 141 pounds featured AJ Gunn (So., Evergreen, Colo.) and Angel Flores and the Grizzlies wrestler was able to earn a win by fall over Gunn at 3:56.
