Wrestling set to compete at UNK Younes Hospitality Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. (January 19, 2024) - Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling will hit the road this week and compete at the University of Nebraska Kearney Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday at the Buffalo Co. Fairgrounds in Kearney.

This weekend, CSU Pueblo will face-off in duals against Sioux Falls (S.D.), No. 18 Northern State and (RV) Maryville.

Other teams competing on Saturday are Nebraska-Kearney, Central Oklahoma, Ouachita Baptist, and Western Colorado.

The ThunderWolves are back on the mat after a strong outing to start 2024 in Gunnison at the Western Colorado Open and Tracy Borah Duals.

At the WCU Open, AJ Gunn (So., Evergreen, Colo.) and Solomon Arnds-Volcin (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) both finished in second place in their respective weight class. 

In Saturday's two duals against (RV) Findlay and Minot State, the ThunderWolves first defeated the Oilers from Findlay 39-7 behind eight wins from the Pack. As a team, CSU Pueblo earned one win by fall, two major decision wins, and one tech fall victory.

Josiah Aldinger (Fr., Falcon, Colo.) earned the lone win by fall over Giulian Bodiu (5:20) and Donn Greer (So., Soledad, Calif.) picked up a TF win (23-7) over Andrew (Jayson) Knick.

Cyruss Meeks (Jr., Casper, Wyo.) picked up a 10-2 maj. decision over Logan Sanom.

In the second dual of the day, CSU Pueblo and the Beavers of Minot State, each team won five matches in the ten-match dual.

Ben Gould (Sr., Canyon Country, Calif.) earned the only win by fall for the ThunderWolves at the 197 pound match-up. Gould pinned Cannon Potts at 2:58, scoring six points for the ThunderWolves.

Also adding to the team points with decision wins were Castro, Atencio, Nichols, and Arnds-Volcin.

UNK DUALS MATCH-UPS
The ThunderWolves and Sioux Falls meet up for the first time in school history when they meet on Saturday.

In the second dual against Northern State, the Pack and Wolves have played against each other three times overall with the first meeting a 20-15 win on Jan. 19, 2013. The ThunderWolves hold a 2-1 series lead and in the last match-up on Jan. 14, 2014, CSU Pueblo defeated Northern State 26-14 in Aberdeen, S.D.

Against Maryville, CSU Pueblo is 1-0 all-time versus the Saints. On Jan. 13, 2018, the ThunderWolves defeated then-No. 19 Maryville 25-24 in a thrilling dual at the Midwest Duals.
