PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team continued its season opening three match homestand here late Thursday evening with a 4-0 setback to Lubbock Christian at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Courts.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves fall to 0-2 on the season, while LCU improves to 2-0.
The match was originally scheduled for Friday morning, but a forecast that called for overnight rain forced the match to be played on Thursday evening. The Pack will conclude the homestand with an 8 a.m. match Saturday against Fort Hays State.
In Thursday night's match, the two teams began with doubles play. LCU swept all three doubles matches to earn the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
At No. 1 doubles, junior
Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) and freshman
Mariangel Nunez (Weston, Fla./Unidad Educativa Padre Claret) fell 6-3 to Axelle Jacquemin and Anatasiia Opolska.
Sophomore
Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) paired with junior
Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District of Columbia) at No. 2 doubles and fell 6-1 to LCU's tandem of Andrea De Bernardo and Michelle Trochez.
Junior
Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) and freshman
Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) fell 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to Emily-Bo Meyer and Mariia Koroleva.
Following doubles action, the teams played singles and only three singles matches were completed when LCU clinched the win as they won all three of them.
The singles matches that were completed were at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5. The other three matches were in the second set when LCU sealed the match victory.
At No. 1 singles, Garcia fell in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to De Bernardo, while at No. 2 singless Aebischer fell 6-0, 6-1 to Jacquemin and senior
Sonrisa Bustamante (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central) fell by identical 6-0 scores to Opolska at the No. 5 spot.
The Pack won a total of eight games in the three unfinished singles matches with junior
