PUEBLO, Colo. (April 7, 2023) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball earned a split of the first two games against Colorado Mesa and won game one 3-2 before dropping the second game, 11-3 (5 inn.) at Rawlings Sports Complex.
Caitlyn Cole (Fr., Merced, Calif.) finished the day with a team-high four hits and one RBI.
In the first game,
Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) had her most effective outing of the year in a complete game and scattered six hits and allowed six runs. She finished with six strikeouts and gave up six walks.
CSU Pueblo broke a scoreless tie and scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a pair of extra-base hits by Cole and
Jill Bishop (Sr., Brighton, Colo.). The ThunderWolves runs came after capitalizing on defensive error.
Colorado Mesa got on the board in the fourth inning on a solo home run with two outs.
The Pack got the run back in the fifth after Cole reached on a single to center field and two stolen bases put her at third base. She scored the third run for the Pack on a sac groundout on the infield.
CMU hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning and Trujillo was able to retire the side and avoid the tying run to score.
In the seventh, Trujillo sat the Mavericks down in order to pick up the win and improve to 4-8 on the year. She finished the game with 11 runners left on base.
In the second game, the potent Mavericks lineup drew first blood and scored three runs on three hits in their first at bat.
The Pack got one run back in their first time on offense with a ground out to short stop.
After a scoreless second inning by both teams, CMU tacked on three more runs in the third and CSU Pueblo responded with two runs in the fourth.
Sienna Doporto (Fr., Lovington, N.M.) came up with the bases loaded and hit into a double-play and aggressive base running by the ThunderWolves allowed the two runs to cross the plate.
The Mavericks put up a five-spot in the fifth inning on three hits to go ahead eight runs.
The Pack was retired with three ground outs to the left side to end the game 11-3 in a run-ruled shortened contest.
CSU Pueblo (13-24, 8-20 RMAC) will finish the series with two more games on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Rawlings Sports Complex.
