Men's Lacrosse Scores Season High Tying 11 Goals in Home Setback to Westminster

Lessley and Naves Each Record Hat Tricks Against Griffins

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo men's lacrosse recorded its second straight game of scoring a season high 11 goals, but the ThunderWolves couldn't overcome an 11-3 first half deficit en route to suffering a 25-11 setback to Westminster in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.

Friday's game was the second meeting between the two schools this season the Griffins opened RMAC play in Salt Lake City on March 6 with a dominating 22-1 victory over the Pack. In that game, the Pack scored just one goal on 19 shots and didn't cause a turnover, while in Friday's game, the Pack scored 11 goals, took 33 shots and caused eight turnovers.

With the setback, CSU Pueblo falls to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC, while Westminster improved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Freshman midfielder Lane Lessley (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) and senior attacker Logan Naves (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) each recorded a hat trick in the game, while redshirt senior attacker Trevor Thompson (Sacramento, Calif./C.K. McClatchy) scored a season-high two goals.

The Pack were outshot in Friday's game, 54-33 and lost the turnover battle, 23-19, but were 17-for-25 on clears. Westminster finished 13-for-19 on clears and won the face-off battle, 31-8 as the Griffins were 31-for-39 on face-offs and the Pack was just 8-for-39.

Naves gave the Pack an early 1-0 lead just less than 90 seconds into the contest as he scored a goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Nathan Liderman (Bend, Ore./Summit).

That would be the only lead of the game for the Pack as the Griffins scored the final six goals of the first period to lead 6-1 after the opening 15 minutes of play.

Thompson would stop the Griffins run of goals as he scored an unassisted goal just 61 seconds into the second period to cut Westminster's lead to 6-2. After Thompson's goal, the Griffins would reel off five straight goals, including two man-up goals to take an 11-2 lead in the game with 1:13 left in the opening half. For the game, Westminster was 3-for-5 on its man-up opportunities, while CSU Pueblo was just 1-for-6.

Naves would cap the first half scoring with a goal that was assisted by Lessley to cut the Griffins lead to 11-3 at the half.

The Pack opened the third period by scoring four of the first five goals to cut Westminster's lead to 12-7, including Lessley capping the run with back-to-back goals. The other two goals came from Naves and Liderman.

Westminster, though, answered right back as they closed the third period by scoring four straight goals to take a 16-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Griffins would outscore the Pack, 9-4, in the final period to cap the scoring. In the fourth period, the Pack got goals from Lessley to open the period and then goals from Thompson, junior midfielder CJ Rowe (Indianapolis, Ind./Concordia-Chicago) and freshman midfielder Chris Easley (Southington, Conn./Weber).

Lessley and Liderman combined to take 13 shots for the Pack, including putting 10 of those shots on goal.

Senior midfielder Turner Dirk (Strathmore, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy) won five of his 14 face-offs in the game, while freshman Bryce Campbell (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian) was just 3-for-13 on face-offs and was called for two delay of game penalties on face-offs in the game.

Naves, Lessley and graduate student goalie Ethan Ferrie (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) each had two ground balls and junior defender Corey Healy (Keller, Texas/Keller) had two caused turnovers.

The Griffins got 25 goals from 12 different players as Luke Stilstrop led the way with six goals, while Joseph Celentano and Park Robbins had three goals. Four others had two goals in the win.

Ferrie played nearly 48 minutes in goal for the Pack and recorded 14 saves, had two ground balls and two turnovers, while allowing 18 goals. Freshman Zane Lassberg (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) played the final 11:49 of the game and allowed seven goals and made three saves.

Jacob Miller played the first three periods in the cage for Westminster and had eight saves and allowed seven goals, while Charles Stemen played the fourth period and allowed four goals and made one save.

The Pack will return to action next Sunday, April 16 as they host Colorado Mesa for a 12 p.m. RMAC contest at ALG Stadium.
