CHADRON, Neb. (April 28, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team wrapped its season with a doubleheader split against Chadron State, falling 8-0 (5 inn.) and winning the series finale in comeback fashion, 13-12 over the Eagles on Friday at CSC Softball Field.
On the day, Pack Freshman
Caitlyn Cole (Merced, Calif.) slugged her 13th & 14th home runs of the season during game two. Cole's home run total is the most by a Pack player in a single season since 2013.Â
The ThunderWolves dropped the first game and avoided a no-hitter with a single in the fifth inning against Chadron's Tori Haug.
In the game, CSU Pueblo managed two runners on base.
In the series finale, the Pack offense responded and scored five runs in each of the fourth and seventh inning.Â
CSU Pueblo scored a quick run in the first inning on a sac bunt groundout from
Madelyn Huerta (Fr., Azusa, Calif.) for an early 1-0 lead.
The Pack added more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run blast hit by Cole.
In the at-bat prior,
Raelynn Rogers (So., Surprise, Ariz.) hit a RBI-single for the ThunderWolves.
Leading 6-0, Chadron State bounced back and scored six runs on a pair of three-run homers hit in the bottom of the fourth.
Tied at 6-6, the home team climbed ahead 9-6 with three more runs scoring in the fifth inning. A lead-off homer, a walk with the bases loaded and a sac fly accounted for the three runs for the Eagles.
The Pack got one run back and cut the deficit to 9-7 in the sixth inning on a Huerta single on the infield.
After a quick 1-2-3 bottom fo the sixth, the Pack got back on offense, trailing 9-7 before the ThunderWolves stormed back with five runs in their last at-bat.
Cole stepped to the plate and crushed another three-run bomb over the center field wall, coupled with two-run single hit by
Seaerra Fuentes Arellano (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) earlier in the inning put the Pack on top 12-9.
In the home half of the seventh, CSC rallied and hit a three-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 12 apiece.
During the top of the eighth inning, CSU Pueblo took advantage of a lead-off double and an error on the defense to score the go-ahead run.Â
In their last stitch effort, Chadron got the tying run to the plate but three strikeouts in the inning from
Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) sealed the ThunderWolves win.
CSU Pueblo finishes the year with a 21-30 overall record and a 16-26 clip in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
