Cole belts two homers in DH loss at UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 15, 2023) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball infielder Caitlyn Cole (Fr., Merced, Calif.) had her first career multi-homerun game and finished with three extra-base hits for CSU Pueblo in a DH loss on Saturday at University of Colorado Colorado Springs, falling 6-5 in game one and 11-3 (6 inn.) in the second game.

Cole also tallied three runs and five RBI and earned two walks.

Ashley Tosh (So., Fremont, Calif.) recorded three hits and one RBI, while Marissa Robertson (Fr., Rocklin, Calif.) smacked two hits and collected one RBI on the day.

In the first game, Cole led off the third inning with home run to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.

Through four innings in the circle, Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) was throwing a one-hitter along with issuing a pair of walks against the Mountain Lions.

In the top of the fifth for the Pack, Tosh stepped in with two outs and hit an RBI-double to go ahead 2-0.

The Mountain Lions took the lead in the bottom half, scoring four runs on three hits including a two-run homerun, chasing Trujillo from the game.

Marika Spector (Jr., Wimberley, Tex.) came in and got the last out with the ThunderWolves down 4-2.

CSU Pueblo responded in the next half inning and tied the game thanks to a two-run bomb with two outs from Cole.

UCCS jumped ahead with a run in the home half of the sixth inning. Spector got into a jam with the bases loaded and gave up the go-ahead run after throwing the second walk of the inning to put UCCS up, 5-4.

Trujillo returned to the pitcher's circle and recorded the final two outs to get the Pack back on offense.

In the 7th inning, the ThunderWolves tied the game after Robertson led off with a double and she would score in the next at-bat when Tosh reached on an error on the infield.

The Mountain Lions returned to the dug out to start their final at-bat and with one-out, Courtnie Heller hit a walk-off solo shot to give the home team the 6-5 victory.

Trujillo took the loss and falls to 5-10 on the year.

In the nightcap, UCCS jumped to an 8-0 lead after four innings and the Pack scored three runs in the fifth inning to avoid the eight-run rule loss.

In the frame, Cole hit a 2-run double and she would score the third run of the inning from a sac-fly out from Madelyn Huerta (Fr., Azusa, Calif.).

Lucy Carney (So., Lakewood, Colo.) and Spector combined in the effort and allowed nine earned runs in six innings of work.

UCCS scored three runs in home half of the sixth to come away with the 11-3 win in six innings.

Carney took the loss and drops to 7-9 this season.

CSU Pueblo (14-27, 9-23 RMAC) finishes the series with two more games tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. at Mountain Lion Field.
