SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's lacrosse team returned to action here for the first time in 19 days here Saturday afternoon as the ThunderWolves fell 15-8 in a hard-fought non-conference game to Lynn University that was played at Dumke Field on the campus of Westminster College.
With the setback, the Pack fall to 0-4 on the season, while Lynn, who is from Sunshine State Conference and is located in Boca Raton, Fla., improved to 4-3 on the season.
The Pack will remain in Salt Lake City for a couple of days as they open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Monday, March 6 at 12 p.m. against Westminster.
In Saturday's game, the Pack took 27 shots and 17 of those shots on goal as freshman midfielder
Nathan Liderman (Bend, Ore./Summit) scored four of the Pack's eight goals, while freshman midfielder
Chris Easley (Southington, Conn./Weber) added two goals in the game. The other goals were scored by freshman midfielder
Lane Lessley (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) and sophomore attacker
Johnny Cole (University Place, Wash./Curtis Senior). The goal by Lessley was his team-leading sixth of the season.
Lynn, who finished the game with 39 shots and 32 shots on goal, scored the first goal of the game on an unassisted tally by Thomas Murray just four-plus minutes into the game. Liderman, though, would score an unassisted goal nearly two minutes later to tie game at 1-all.
The Fighting Knights, though, would close the first period with four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead.
Liderman would stop the Lynn run of goals with is second unassisted goal just three-plus minutes into the second period to pull CSU Pueblo within 5-2.
Lynn would answer with two straight goals to push its lead to 7-2 with 8:55 left in the second period. Cole would drop Lynn's lead to 7-3 following his goal off an assist from senior attacker
Logan Naves (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) with 3:33 left in the period.
Holding a 7-3 lead at half, Lynn opened the third period by scoring four straight goals in a span of four-plus minutes to extend its lead to 11-3.
Easley and Lessley would add goals at 7:24 and 5:13 in the third period to pull the Pack within 11-5, but two more goals by Lynn pushed its lead to 13-5 with 51 seconds remaining in the third period. Liderman added his third unassisted goal of the night with 29 seconds left in the period to make the score 13-6 heading into the final period.
Both teams traded goals in the fourth period as Easley scored man-up goal just two-plus minutes into the final period, before Lynn's Colin Farragher added a goal with 8:47 left and then Liderman scored his fourth goal to bring the Pack within 14-8. That would be as close the Pack would get as Fisher Williams capped the scoring with his goal off an assist from Dylan Colon with 5:32 left in the game. Williams' goal gave Lynn a 15-8 advantage.
Williams, Murray and Stephen Becker each had three goals for Lynn, while Farragher tallied two goals in the win. Becker also added four assists for seven points, while Colon had two assists.
Liderman, Easley and Lessley each took five shots for the Pack, while Naves collected a team-best four ground balls and caused a turnover.
Lynn won the ground ball battle, 34-19 and were 16-for-26 on faceoffs. CSU Pueblo was 10-for-26 on faceoffs in the game. Freshman midfielder
Bryce Campbell (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian) took 23 of those 25 faceoff attempts as he was 9-for-23 in the game. Freshman midfielder
Jalen Shipp (Denver, Colo./Thomas Jefferson) won the other faceoff for the Pack.
In goal, graduate student
Ethan Ferrie (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) played all 60 minutes in net and recorded 15 saves to go along with 17 goals allowed. Colin Casey played all 60 minutes in goal for Lynn and had nine saves to go with eight goals allowed one groundball.
Both teams were even on turnovers with 16 each on the game, while Pueblo was 1-for-3 on its extra-man opportunities. Lynn did not have any extra-man chances in the game.
