PUEBLO, Colo. (March 19, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team earned a split of its doubleheader on the final day against New Mexico Highlands. The ThunderWolves won the first game 7-4 in extra innings and fell in the series finale 6-5 at Rawlings Sports Complex.
Madelyn Huerta (Fr., Azusa, Calif.) finished the day with three hits including a triple in game two.
Darleen Falcon (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit her first career walk-off homerun, a three run bomb to end the first game.
Freshman
Caitlyn Cole (Merced, Calif.) hit her second homerun of the weekend and is now tied for the team lead with four bombs on the season.
In the first game, The ThunderWolves went down early in the first inning and responded with three runs in the second inning. Falcon hit a sac fly to left and plated two runs.
Later in the inning,
Delaney Barela (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) executed a perfectly placed bunt that allowed the runner to score from third base.
The ThunderWolves added another run in the third on a single on the infield hit by
Ashley Tosh (So., Fremont, Calif.).
NMHU evened the score on a three-run homerun hit over the left field wall, tying the game at 4-4.
Starting in the circle for the Pack,
Marissa Robertson (Fr., Rocklin, Colo.) went 3.2 innings and allowed four earned runs and six hits. She ended with two strikeouts.
Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) came on in relief in the fourth and allowed no runs and four hits over 4.1 innings of work.
Trujillo and the Pack defense allowed no runs to the Cowgirls over the last four innings including the eighth inning before the ThunderWolves went back on offense.
In the frame and following two walks and two outs, Falcon stepped in and belted a shot over that hit the scoreboard, ending the game 7-4 in favor of the Pack.
Trujillo picks up the win and improves to 2-6 on the year.
In the series finale, Cole propelled to a 3-0 with her two-run blast combined with a throwing error on the defense put the Pack up three.
Highlands tied the game in the third inning and the ThunderWolves responded with two runs in their half on a two-run triple by Huerta.
The Cowgirls scored three runs over the next two innings and took a 6-5 lead heading to the sixth.
The Pack got one hit over the last two innings but was unable to get the tying run to the plate.
Trujillo took the loss and drops to 2-7 this season.
CSU Pueblo (10-19, 5-15 RMAC) next goes on the road and begins a four-game RMAC series at Colorado School of Mines starting Saturday at Noon in Golden.
