Men's Basketball Tops Century Mark in Sunday Home Victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State

Win Was Fourth Straight for Pack, Improves Record to 4-2 on Season

PUEBLO, Colo. – For the first time this season and seventh time since the 2019-20 season, Colorado State University Pueblo eclipsed the century mark here Sunday afternoon with a 100-39 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State in non-conference action at Massari Arena.

Sunday's win was the fourth consecutive for the Pack as they moved their record to 4-2 on the season, while Oklahoma Panhandle is 2-2 on the season, but went 0-4 against Division II schools in exhibition play. The four-game win streak is the longest for the Pack since opening last season by winning its first four games.

The 100 point game was the first since tallying 103 points in a 103-35 home victory last season against Bacone College, while the 61-point victory margin was the second largest for the Pack in the five-year era of head coach Matt Hammer as the only larger margin of victory (68 points) came in that game last season against Bacone College.

In Sunday's victory, the Pack, who never trailed in the game, played all 13 players on its roster and 12 of those players scored, including four finishing in double figures. Junior guard Daeyon James (Stockbridge, Ga./Seward County CC) led the way with 16 points in 13 minutes, while sophomore guard Hilmir Hallgrimsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Gardabaer Secondary School) added a career-high 15 points off the bench as the Pack bench scored 66 points in the game.

In addition to James and Hallgrimsson, freshman forward Corbin Garver (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and senior guard Brevin Walter (Las Vegas, Nev./South Dakota Mines) each scored 11 points off the bench.

For the game, eight Pack players scored eight or more points and eight different Pack players hit a trey in the game as the Pack finished the game with a season-high 15 made 3-pointers as they shot 47 percent from long distance on the day. James and Hallgrimsson each hit four treys in the contest.

The Pack opened the game with back-to-back treys in the opening 90 seconds of the game and led 10-0 just four minutes into the game, before the Aggies, who fell 94-61 on Saturday at Colorado Christian, scored seven straight points to pull within 10-7 with 13:30 left in the opening half.

That would be as close as the Aggies would get as they would outscore OPHSU, 34-10 over the final 13 minutes of the opening half, including a 20-0 run that turned a 21-13 lead into a 41-13 advantage with 3:19 left in the half. The Pack led 44-17 at the half.

In the opening half, the Pack shot 38 percent from the field and 31 percent from the 3-point line and forced 17 turnovers that led to 20 points. The Pack only had three turnovers in the first half.

The Pack would outscore the Aggies, 56-22 in the second half as they shot 57 percent from the field and 63 percent (10-for-16) from the 3-point line and reached the century mark on two free throws by freshman guard Shad Levy (Geismar, La./The Dunham School) with three seconds left in the game.

The Pack bench scored 49 of the Pack's 56 second half points as Hallgrimsson tallied 15 points, while Garver had nine points, freshman forward Matt Yost (Aurora, Colo./Feltrim Academy) had eight points and Levy added seven points.

Oklahoma Panhandle would be paced offensively by 13 points from Amaree Brown, while Tahki Chievous, Kwessi Anthony and Ethan Wiley each had six points in the loss.

The Aggies shot 30 percent from the field and were held to just 4-for-19 (21 percent) shooting from the 3-point line in the game. Pack leads the RMAC in three-point field goal percentage defense as their foes are shooting just 17.9 percent (20-for-112) from long distance on the season.

The Pack held a 40-28 edge on the boards with as Garver had a team-high five, while Pack also collected 22 steals as the Aggies committed 35 turnovers that led to 52 points for the Pack. Senior guard Makiah Morris (San Diego, Calif./San Diego City College) led the way with five steals, while Garver had four steals.

CSU Pueblo also shot 83 percent from the free throw line as they were 29-for-35 at the charity stripe. OPHSU was 9-for-16 (56.3) percent from the line.
