Women's Golf Finishes Third and Rodriguez Wins Playoff Over Severin at Nick Turner Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's golf concluded play here Tuesday at the Nick Turner Invitational with a third place finish out of 10 teams at the event hosted by Fort Lewis College and held at the Arroyo del Oso Golf Club.

While the ThunderWolves took home third place as a team at its final event of the 2023-24 fall season, junior Zoey Rodriguez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South) took home individual medalist honors after winning a one-hole playoff against her teammate, senior Kylie Severin (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep). Both Rodriguez and Severin tied for first overall with 1-under par scores of 143 for 36 holes, butin the playoff, which was held on the No. 10 hole, Rodriguez scored a birdie, while Severin scored a par to win her first tournament title this season.

On the team front, CSU Pueblo followed up its opening round 301 with a 291 in the final round to finish with 16-over par score of 592 for 36 holes. The Pack's final round score of 291 was the lowest round of the tournament for a team.

No. 10 ranked Cal State San Marcos and No. 14 ranked Cal State East Bay tied for the team championship at the event as they each finished with a 12-over par score of 588 to win by four shots over the Pack and 14 shots over fourth place Western New Mexico and Lubbock Christian, who each shot 602 as a team. Cal State San Marcos shot rounds of 295 and 293, while Cal State East Bay also shot rounds of 295 and 293.

Rodriguez, who was tied for second place after Monday's opening round with a 1-under par 71, followed up that score with an even-par 72 in final round, while Severin, who was in a tie for fifth place after the opening round with a 2-over par 74, rebounded to shoot a tournament-best score of 3-under par 69 in Tuesday's final round.

In Tuesday's final round, Severin recorded six birdies, three bogeys and nine pars, while Rodriguez tallied five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars on their scorecards. For the event, Severin and Rodriguez tied for the tournament lead in birdies with eight, while Severin led the tournament field in par-4 scoring at 1-under par (3.95) and Rodriguez was tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring at 3-under par (4.63).

The Pack duo finished one shot in front of Lauren Hickam of Cal State San Marcos and Jasmin Krishna of Cal State East Bay, who each tied for third with an even-par 144 for 36 holes. Hickam fired rounds of 71 and 73, while Krishna, who was the first round leader, had rounds of 70 and 74.

Rodriguez, Severin, Hickam and Krishna were the only golfers in the field of 62 players to shoot even-par or better at the tournament.

The biggest mover of the day for the Pack was junior Anju Ogi (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West), who jumped 26 spots up the final leaderboard after carding a final round score of 2-under par 70. In the opening round, she shot an 82. At the event, Ogi finished in a tie for 20th place with a 152 for 36 holes. Ogi finished the event with five birdies and among the leaders in par-4 scoring as she averaged 3-over par (4.15) on the course's par-4 holes.

The fourth and final counter for the Pack was sophomore Freya Constable (Edinburgh, Scotland/Boroughmuir), who followed up her opening round 78 with a final score of 80 to finish in a tied for 36th place with a 158 for 36 holes. Constable was among the tournament leaders in par-4 scoring as she played the par-4 holes at 2-over par (4.10).

Freshman Lisa Ekberg (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Aranäsgymnasiet) was the fifth and final golfer for the team as she shot a 162 for 36 holes to finish in a tie for 46th place overall. Ekberg followed up her opening round 78 with an 84 in the final round on Tuesday. She finished the event with five birdies and was among the tournament leaders in par-5 scoring as averaged 1-under par (4.88) on the par-5 holes.

Along with the five members of the team, the Pack also two players competing as individuals at the event – junior Merielle Gojo (Cherry Hills Valley, Colo./Cherry Creek) and freshman Delfin Filiz (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Rockport School).

Filiz ended the tournament in a tie for 36th place as she shot rounds of 81 and 77 to finish with a 158 for 36 holes, while Gojo carded rounds of 77 and 84 to finish in a tie for 44th place with a 161 for 36 holes.

Tuesday's final round was the last round of the fall season for the Pack. During the fall, the team competed in five events and recorded Top 5 finishes in three of the five events, including a runner-up finish at the season opening Swan Memorial Invitational held at the Broadlands Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo. The Pack recorded back-to-back third place finishes at its final two events as they were also third at last week's Sam Proal Invitational held at the Pueblo Country Club.
