PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's golf fired a final round 297 as a team here Tuesday to finish its annual Sam Proal Invitational held at the Pueblo Country Club in third place out of 13 teams.
For the two-day, 36-hole event, the ThunderWolves finished with a team score of 617 as they shot a 320 in Monday's opening round, before carding a tournament-best 297 in Tuesday's final round. CSU Pueblo entered the final round sitting in fourth place as they climbed up one spot on the final leaderboard.
Texas A&M-International won the team title with a two-day, 36-hole score of 610 as a team. Midwestern State finished second with a 36-hole team total of 611. The Pack did collect wins over the eight other Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools that competed in the event – MSU Denver, who finished fourth, South Dakota Mines, who finished sixth, Chadron State, who finished eighth, Colorado Christian and Fort Lewis finished tied for ninth, Colorado Mesa finished 11th, Black Hills State was 12th and Adams State was 13th.
Leading the way for the Pack in the tournament was junior
Zoey Rodriguez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South), who fired a 4-over par 148 to finish in a two-way tie with Lubbock Christian's Ali Escamilla for second place. Rodriguez, who shot a 4-over par 76 in Monday's opening round, carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday. She finished the event tied for ninth in pars with 10, tied for fourth in birdies with four and was tied for first in the tournament in par-4 scoring as she averaged 4.13 (+1) on the course's par-4 holes. Rodriguez's final round 72 was tied for the second lowest round of the event.
Texas A&M-International's Zoe Wurmli took home individual medalist honors by one shot over Rodriguez and Escamilla as she shot a 3-over par 147 for 36 holes. Wurmli opened the event with a 74, before firing a 73 in the final round. Her final round 73 was tied for the third lowest rounds of the event.
The Pack's strong play on Tuesday by aided by performance of senior
Kylie Severin (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep), who shot a tournament-low tying final round score of 1-under par 71 to jump eight spots up to leaderboard and finish the tournament in a tie for fourth place with a 5-over par-149 for 36 holes. Severin and Escamilla were the only two golfers that shot a round under par in the tournament as both players achieved that in the final round. Severin finished the event with a tournament-best six birdies, all of which came in the final round and she was tied for the tournament lead in par-4 scoring at 4.13 (+1) and was tied for second in par-5 scoring at 3-under par (4.40).
Junior
Anju Ogi (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) finished the event with a 15-over par score of 159 to finish in a tie for 21st place. Ogi followed up her opening round score of 81 with a 78 in the final round. She finished tied for eighth in the par-4 scoring at the event as she averaged 4.25 (+2) on the par-4 holes.
The fourth and final counter for the Pack was freshman
Lisa Ekberg (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Aranäsgymnasiet), who shot a 17-over par 161 for 36 holes to finish in a tie for 27th place. She improved her second round score by nine shots on Tuesday as she carded a 4-over 76 in the final round after shooting an opening 85. She was tied for fifth in the tournament field in par-3 scoring as she averaged 3.20 (+1) on the par-3 holes.
CSU Pueblo's fifth golfer that did not factor into the team score on Tuesday was sophomore
Freya Constable (Edinburgh, Scotland/Boroughmuir), who shot a 36-hole total of 172 to finish in a tie for 46th place. Much like her other four teammates, Constable improved her final round score on Tuesday as she shot a 92 in the first round, before carding an 80 in the final round. Constable was one of six players in the tournament to record an eagle as she recorded an eagle on the par-5 No. 11 hole.
Along with the five members of the team, the Pack also two players competing as individuals at the event – junior
Merielle Gojo (Cherry Hills Valley, Colo./Cherry Creek) and freshman
Delfin Filiz (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Rockport School).
Gojo carded a 36-hole total of 177 to finish in a tie for 60th place as she had rounds of 92 and 85, while Filiz finished with a 180 for 36 holes to finish in 64th place as she fired rounds of 94 and 86.
The Pack are scheduled for close out its fall tournament schedule next week (Oct. 16-17) as they compete at the Nick Turner Invitational, which is being hosted by Fort Lewis College and held at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Club in Albuquerque, N.M.
