Women's Tennis Closes Fall Campaign With Road Setback to Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team closed out its fall season schedule here Saturday with a 7-0 setback to Colorado Mesa University at the Elliott Tennis Center.
 
With the setback, the ThunderWolves fell to 0-5 on the season, while Colorado Mesa improved to 2-1 on the year.
 
Action started in doubles play on Saturday as the No. 1 duo of freshman Mariangel Nunez (Weston, Fla./Unidad Educative Padre Claret) and sophomore Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) dropped a hard-fought battle 6-2 to Mesa's Julianna Campos and Devyn Rodriguez.
 
The Mavericks then secured the doubles point with its win at the No. 2 spot as Issy Coman and Kristen Thomas defeated junior Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) and junior Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District of Columbia), 7-5.
 
Mesa would then sweep all three doubles matches as the No. 3 team of Makenna Livingston and Delia Maier picked up a 6-1 win over junior Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) and freshman Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate), 6-1.
 
Following doubles, the teams turned their focus to singles and as the Mavs won all six of the matches, including needing a third set tiebreaker to earn victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
 
Thomas picked up the first singles point for the Mavs as she defeated Pendon at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Maier would give the Mavs a 3-0 lead in the match following her win at the No. 5 spot over Travica, 6-2, 6-0.
 
Garcia and Livingston would battle to a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot as Garcia won the first set, 6-2, before Livingston earned a 6-0 win in the second set to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the two players battled back-and-forth until Livingston would prevail 10-6 to give the Mavs a 4-0 lead in the match.
 
Aebischer fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 3 spot over Rodriguez.
 
Campos would also need a third set tiebreaker to defeat Brienza at the No. 4 singles spot. Brienza won the first set, 6-1, before Campos won 6-3 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Campos would earn a 10-6 win.
 
The final singles win came at the No. 1 spot as Coman and Nunez engaged in a hard-fought battle as Coman won the first set, 6-4 and then picked up a 7-5 win in the second set.
 
CSU Pueblo will now turn its focus to offseason workouts and will return to the court in spring of 2024.
