GUNNISON, Colo. (January 6, 2023) - Colorado State University Pueblo Junior grappler
Jayson Davis took home first place and finished 3-0, pacing the ThunderWolves Friday at the Western Colorado Open. Four others ended in the top four on the day.
Remington Winmill finished third at 184 pounds and went 3-1 on the day.
Devin Lueck (125 lbs.),
Cole Bennett (149 lbs.), and
Donn Greer (194 lbs.) each finished top four in their respective weight class.
Davis scored three wins by fall all against opponents from Colorado School of Mines. Davis' day included a 17-2 tech fall win in the quarterfinal round over Charles Holub. In the semifinal match versus Cade Whish, Davis recorded a fall at 4:31 and in the championship bout against Anthony Atria, Davis ended the match with a win by fall at 4:22.
At 125 pounds, Lueck went 2-2 on the day and lost 17-2 in the third place match against Gavin Caprella from Air Force Prep. He earned two wins by fall over Ian Balana from Western at 4:29 and against Adam Concepcion of Adams State at 4:09.
Bennett wrestled back in his 149-pound bracket and won three in a row after taking a first round loss by fall against Wyoming's Ridge Briggs.
In his second match, Bennett earned a major decision 15-6 against Colorado Mesa's Kaden Hine. The next match pitted Bennett against John Finnegan from Colorado Mesa and Bennett came away with a hard-fought 9-4 victory.
During his consolation semifinal, Bennett faced off against Western's Amir Musalli and scored a 12-9 win, taking Bennett to the third place match.Â
In his final outing of the day, Bennett had a re-match with Briggs and fell at 1:24, securing fourth place.
At 194 pounds, Greer dropped a heartbreaking 2-0 loss in the first match against Jayden Johnson from New Mexico Highlands. Greer rebounded in his next outing and posted a convincing 19-6 major decision over Dante Pallone of Western Colorado.
Bennett scored an 8-1 win in the next bout against Jacob Castillo from New Mexico Highlands and advanced to the consolation semifinal. In that match, Bennett defeated Braden Baumgartner 7-5 to make it to the third place match.
Lined up against Franklin Cruz of Northern Colorado, Bennett dropped a 4-0 decision and ended his day in fourth place.
Richard Palomar ended in fifth place and went 3-2 on the day.
Aleksander Gunn went 4-3 in his outings and recorded a pair of falls.
CSU Pueblo returns to the mat tomorrow at Mountaineer Field House at the Tracy Borah Duals. The ThunderWolves are scheduled to wrestle Colorado Mesa at 9 a.m., Minot State at 10:30 a.m. and end the day at 1 p.m. against Findlay.
