Pack record five wins in 17-15 loss against Mines

PUEBLO, Colo. (January 27, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team picked up five wins including four in a row in the home debut, falling 17-15 against Colorado School of Mines, Friday at Massari Arena.

Conor Goucher (R-Fr., Orting, Wash.), Cyruss Meeks (So., Casper, Wyo.), Elijah Valdez (R-Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), Tytus Coombs (R-Fr., Meeker, Colo.) and Ben Gould (R-Jr., Canyon Country, Calif.) all won their individual matches for the Pack.

Starting the match at 125 pounds, the ThunderWolves' Dominick Castro (R-Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) suffered a 9-2 setback against Christian Lopez from Mines.

In the next bout at 133 pounds, Marquis Kemp (Jr., Towson, MD) fell in a tech-fall loss to Weston Diblasi.

Michael Atencio faced the ninth-ranked wrestler in Grayston Dibalsi and took him to the max, falling 7-6 after one bonus point was awarded to Dibalsi for riding time.

Atencio went down 4-0 through two periods before igniting his offense in the third period. He scored one escape point and quickly earned a takedown to get within 4-3 deficit. 

Mines earned the escape and Atencio quickly got another takedown and tied the match 5-5. Dibalsi went up by one after getting an escape and he was later called twice for stalling with less than a minute to go, tying the match 6-6. 

As the buzzer sounded, Dibalsi was given his bonus point for the one-point victory.

The Pack's first win of the night came in the 149-pound match featuring Goucher against Teague Dilbeck. In the first period, Goucher jumped out to a 5-3 lead and added seven points including a four-point near fall to end the period.

In the third, Dilbeck went on a 4-2 scoring run but Goucher's lead was too much in his 14-8 win.

Meeks recorded a 5-1 victory at the 157 pound match-up against the Orediggers' Daniel Caddy. He scored all of his points in the first two periods for the win.

At 165 pounds, Valdez came away with a 8-6 win over Tristin David. The pair battled to a 3-3 tie through the opening period. In the second, Valdez earned a four-point near fall before David fought back for three points and Valdez ahead 7-6 lead before the end of the period.

In the last two-minute period, Valdez chose to start on the bottom and got an escape point before wrestling out the final moments in the win.

Coombs picked up his second win in the last week and his 14th overall in dramatic fashion. In the 174 pound match, Coombs faced Levi Farris from Mines. The duo both started out fast and Coombs scored two four-point near falls and one last escape in the final seconds of the third to tie it at 10-10. 

In the first overtime, Coombs earned the sudden victory one minute into the period to get the win.

Cameron Nesbitt (Jr., Champaign, Ill.) suffered a 10-7 setback against Ryan Cody. Nesbitt scored six points in the third period but his late rally fell short.

Freshman Donn Greer (King City, Calif.) battled No. 5 ranked Anderson Salisbury into overtime. Greer earned a first period takedown and Salisbury got two escape points after choosing the bottom starting position in the second period.

Salisbury earned the two-point win after getting a takedown in overtime.

In the last match of the dual, Gould held on 8-6 against Deandre Rucker. Gould went down 4-2 after falling in two takedowns and earned two escapes in the first period.

Gould got his first takedown in the second period and Rucker earned two escape points for and a 6-4 for the visitors heading into the last period. Gould's offense came alive and he scored four points to come-from-behind after choosing the bottom starting position.

The Pack (6-4, 1-2 RMAC) returns to action on Saturday and welcome Chadron State to Massari Arena starting at 6 p.m.
