PUEBLO, Colo. (May 15, 2022) – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track team hosted the CSU Pueblo Last Chance Invite in the team's final meet before the NCAA Championships.
Reece Sharman-Newell (Fr.) snagged a first-place finish in the 1500-meter run after crossing the line in 3:48.06. The freshman went into the final 400 meters of the race in fifth place and used a strong kick in the last 300 meters to win the race. Sharman-Newell holds the 12th fastest time this year on the NCAA provisional qualifying list (3:45.76).
Jenna McKinley (Sr., Mosca, Colo.) had the best performance of the year as the senior placed first in the shot put and discus. McKinley threw for the third farthest throw in program history while solidifying a spot at the 2022 NCAA Championships next weekend with a mark of 14.76 meters and now sits ninth on the provisional qualifying list. McKinley threw for a distance of 41.46 meters in the discus.
Yasmine Hernandez (Gr., Johnstown, Colo.) also snagged a first-place finish in the 1500-meter run after finishing with a time of 4:21.37. Hernandez also ended the race with a strong kick in the final 400 meters and is the second fastest time in CSU Pueblo program history. Hernandez currently leads the provisional list with the fastest time in NCAA DII this season (4:18.91).
Terrel Johnson (So., Fountain, Colo.) broke his own program record in the long jump while tabbing second place with a mark of 7.41 meters. Johnson fell short by a centimeter to UCCS Peterson Bohannon and is the 23rd farthest jump on the NCAA provisional list this season.
Nigel Mitchell (So., Red Banks, N.J.) ran under 21 seconds for the second straight week in the 200-meter dash while earning a first-place finish with a time of 20.99. Mitchells time is a hundredth of a second behind his program record of 20.98 which he ran last week at the Air Force Twilight Open.
- Kaleb Tipton (So., Lawton, Okla.) finished first in the 800-meter dash after crossing the line in 1:49.96.
- Nate Miller (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed first in the shot put (18.63 meters) and third in the discus (49.34 meters).
- Justin Jenks (Jr., Helena, Mont.) placed first in the hammer (53.92) and second in the shot put (18.33 meters).
- Claire Pauley (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) finished second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:53.52.
- Helen Braybrook (Fr.) finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.83.
- Tyrell Smith (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.39 (Fourth fastest time in program history).
- Heather Graham (Sr., Hugo, Colo.) finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.00 meters.
- Nathan Hood (Sr., St. Davids, Grenada) placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.57 (Tied for ninth fastest time in program history).
- Lucas Moran (Fr.) placed third in the hammer with a mark of 45.72 meters.
- Carl Schmidt (So., Wiesbaden, Germany) finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.36 seconds.
- Hailey Streff (Sr., Madison, S.D.) placed sixth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:38.64.
The ThunderWolves ran a team in the 4x400-meter relay consisting of Schmidt, Sharman-Newell, Hood, and Smith. The team ran the sixth fastest time in program history after crossing the line in 3:11.82 and placed first by nearly four seconds.
