Ni Leads Pack to First-Place Finish At Southern Colorado Masters

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 12, 2022)Andrew Ni claimed first-place and three ThunderWolves finished in the top-10 to lead the Colorado State University Pueblo men's golf team to a first-place finish at the Southern Colorado Masters at the Walking Stick Golf Course.
 
DAY 1
 
The ThunderWolves took advantage of their home course early in the first round and didn't look back and so did senior Andrew Ni (Sr., Edinburgh, Scotland) who carded back-to-back birdies on holes 4 and 5 and a birdie on hole 9 to finish his front nine three-under.  Ni carded three more birdies on his back nine to finish his first-round bogey-free and in control of the lead with a score of 66 (-6).
 
Ni carried the momentum into the second round where he carded four birdies in the first seven holes before recording his first bogey of the tournament on hole 8. The winds picked up during the middle of the second round but it was nothing the Ni and the Pack hadn't seen before. Ni carded two more bogies in his back nine as the winds picked up to finish one-under on the round and seven-under par on the tournament.
 
Jamie Roberts (So., Kinross, Scotland) started his first round with a slower pace, going an even par thru his front nine before picking it up in his back nine. Roberts carded four birdies and a bogey which included three straight birdies on holes 14, 15, and 16 and -3 on his first round. The high winds didn't slow Roberts down either on the second round as he carded three birdies and only one bogey to finish his second round two-under and in second place with an overall score of 139 and in second place.
 
Liam Duncan (Jr., Kirkcaldy, Scotland) climbed his way into contentions in the first two rounds as the junior carded four birdies and a bogey on his front nine of his first round. Duncan followed with an eagle on hole 13 and a birdie on 15 to finish his first round with a 67 (-5). Duncan scored four bogies and three birdies on his second round to finish the day with an overall score of 140 and in third place.
 
Matt Millar (So., Devon, England) shot an even par on his first round before gaining momentum heading into the second. Millar carded an eagle on hole 3 and went -1 on his back nine to finish his second round with a 73 (+1) and an overall score of 146.
 
Jeffrey Nelson (Fr., Commerce City, Colo.) started out hot for the Pack as the freshman shot the best round of his career with a 67 (-5). Nelson's first round included four birdies and an eagle on hole 13. Nelson ran out of steam in the second round, carding an 83 and a final score of 150 (+6).
 
Sanjay Nithiyalingam (Jr., Cambridgeshire, England) played as an individual but played a solid two rounds of golf. Nithilayangim scored a 71 (-1) on round one before carding a 73 (+11) on round two to finish with an overall score of 144 (E). Tyler Tyson (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) also played as an individual and scored a 79 (+6) on round one and an 82 (+10) on round two.
 
Clay Kucera (Sr., Chaska, Minn.) rounded out the ThunderWolves players with a final score of 76 (+4) and an 83 (+11) in round two.
 
DAY 2
 
The ThunderWolves went into the final round with a mindset to have the best team score in the final round. The high winds continued to play with the heads on everyone on the field but the Pack stood strong. The team finished the round with a final score of 308, the second-best score of the day and a first-place finish overall in the tournament with a final score of 864.
 
Ni held on to a first-place finish in the tournament after scoring a 73 (+1) in his final round. Ni carded two birdies and three bogies in the windy conditions to earn his third first-place finish at a tournament at Walking Stick and last tournament on his home course.
 
Nithiyalingam earned the best finish in his college career with a third-place finish. The junior carded moved to as low as -4 on the day and put pressure on teammate Ni for the lead, but ended his back nine with a +1 and a final score of 73 (+1) and 217 overall.
 
Millar climbed his way from tied for 14th after the second round to a tied for fourth-place overall with an even 72 (E) on his final round and a final score of 218.
 
Roberts carded an 81 (+9) in his final round to finish tied for eighth with a final score of 220 while Duncan also scored an 81 (+9) in his final round and eleventh at 221 overall.
 
Nelson tabbed an 83 (+11) in his final round, Kucera carded an 85 (+13). And Tyson scored an 82 (+10).
 
The ThunderWolves look to defend their 2021 RMAC Championship crown with the RMAC Championships beginning on Sunday, April 17th, at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
