PITTSBURG, Kan. (Feb. 12, 2022) – Three program records and a national leader set the tone for the Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's track & field programs at the Indoor Gorilla Classic as the teams get ready for the RMAC Championships in two weeks.
Yasmine Hernandez (Gr., Johnstown, Colo.) and
Hailey Streff (Sr., Madison, S.D.) continue to get better every week as the duo finished first and second, respectively, in the mile run. Hernandez posted a time of 4:43.87, which sets a program record and is the second fastest time in the nation this season while Streff finished in 4:47.05 and is good for second in program history and ninth on the NCAA provisional qualifying list this season. Hernandez also grabbed a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.38 while Streff finished fourth with a time of 2:11.36.
Katherine Higgins (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) had a strong outing in the shot put as the freshman finished in second place after throwing for a new program record of 15.19 meters and is the fifth farthest throw in the nation this season. Teammate
Jenna McKinley (Sr., Mosca, Colo.) wasn't far behind in third place with a mark of 15.06 meters.
Olivia Mikaelian (Fr., Albuquerque, N.M.) snagged 11th place in the weight throw at 15.06 meters while Higgins placed 30th with a mark of 13.54 meters.
After setting the program record in the high jump last weekend,
Mikayla Jones (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) had another strong performance, finishing in third place at 1.60 meters while also finishing in 17th in the triple jump with a mark of 10.89 meters.
Claire Pauley (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) wrapped up the women's performances with sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run after finishing in 17:50.00.
Justin Jenks (Jr., Helena, Mont.) and
Nate Miller (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) continue to eat the competition as the duo finished first and second for the third time this season, this time with Jenks on top. Jenks broke Millers program record (19.54 meters-set this season) in the shot put after throwing 19.55 meters while Miller threw 19.23 meters. Jenks also finished fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 18.08 meters and now leads the nation in the shot put this season in DII.
Cole Munoz (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) tabbed CSU Pueblo's third fastest time and a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run after crossing the line in 14:31.50 while teammate
Nathan Hood (Sr., St. Davids, Grenada) finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.55, just five hundredths of a second behind the winner.
Reece Sharman-Newell (Fr.) was close behind Hood in the 800-meter run after finishing in seventh with a time of 1:52.18 while
Nikolaus Franzmair (Fr.) finished seventh in the mile with a time of 4:09.39 and is now tenth in program history.
Jack Dickson (Fr.),
Carl Schmidt (So., Wiesbaden, Germany), Sherman-Newell, and Franzmair wrapped up the men's performances as the team tabbed sixth out of 25 teams in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:48.96 and is the 17th fastest time this season in DII and second fastest in the RMAC behind Western Colorado and sixth fastest time in program history.
The ThunderWolves will look to do a fine-tuning for the RMAC Championships in two weeks as the squads will compete in the Mines Twilight next Friday and Saturday.
